The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

It is called southern blight and is a fungus in the soil. The place has to have highs over 85F to get it.

It does not seem to spread from insects.
A little different from what we have. We usually start to see blight early in the season, before it gets too warm!

This year I'm going to have to find someone local and buy tomatoes. The horn worms won. I really need to put up 12 quarts of whole, 52 pints of diced and and probably about 25 or so pints of sauce. I hate buying canned goods from the store.

Fresh is always best, that's for sure! No matter who grows the fresh stuff.

Gotcha! I'm trying to decide if I want to plant them again next year or try the super sauce tomatoes or both! The Marzano's are small, but we are getting quite a few of them. I did some pints as I think it will be nice to pull a jar out to make a small batch of salsa once in a while! I will probably put the next batch into quarts! The other tomato varieties will all be in quarts! :)
do both, i found the flavor somewhat lacking in the super sauce to be honest but today, adding all the ingredients for v8 and then blending them and adding to the tomatoes, i also add other herbs and spices, made a thick good tasting sauce with no sugar, husband also liked it

i thought they had left but to my surprise this morning when i went into the greenhouse to check to make sure nothing needed watered, i looked up on one of my hot pepper to see how big the one pepper was getting, and there was a full size worm, took him out to the chickens, went back in and found a small on on another type hot pepper they must be getting hungry if they're eating my hot peppers :idunno
good luck finding some rj, surely someone will have some they can sell you or give you
i ended up with 13 pints of v8 and two quarts of sauce, i still have a few tomatoes coming that i may do more sauce or even whole tomatoes, i can do anything with the wholes and we do love tomato gravy on our grits and biscuits:lau

edited to add just went out to the green house and while looking for more found one on my bell pepper i have in a pot, took it out and stomped on him and my little turkey hen started taking to me, so i picked it up and took it to her, she grabbed it and took off running from the tom with him in hot pursuit lol

That's good to know about the super sauce...the Marzano's are only slightly better than Roma tomatoes, but I will probably grow them again next year! I might have to try the V8 too!

yeah, it took me all day to do the steam juicer v8 and two quarts of sauce, husband sitting here watching to make sure i didn't hurt myself, ask him to go put the load of sheets in the dryer and he did but he also put another load on for me, dark clothes and white in together, i've never showed him how to wash his own clothes :lau bless his little pea picking heart, he just made more work for me, had to re wash

the san marzano's, didn't plant any this year, i use quarts mostly

I bought some San Marzano seeds already, can't wait to try them next year. I'm going to try direct sowing with a row cover and get an early start so I can harvest before temps are too warm next Spring.

Have you tried them fresh? How is the flavor ?
