Jae, it's good that you have the chicks in there. They will teach the turkey how to stay alive. Feed is more of an issue, I'd add brewers yeast and something to boost the protein. Turkeys have similar needs as ducks. 24-28% protein and elevated levels of niacin, meth and something else. All of that can be found in the brewers yeast. Your chicks will do fine on something suitable for the turkey.

They are already on meatbird crumble (which is the best I can do in NZ non chicken wise). When we were hatching ducklings I asked the feed company if it had enough niacin for ducklings and they said it did so no worries there. It's designed for turkey poults, ducklings and meat chicks. I feed it to our quail so it's easier to give all the littlies that than have to buy another type of feed.

I had read that you should never brood chicken chicks and turkey poults together because the turkey won't be able to tell the difference when they are older, but it's not like they'll be sharing housing here so I'm hoping it will be ok. We can 'home' the turkey to a different area from the chickens. I do want to get him a turkey friend but I'll have to wait until DH is next in Auckland as that's the closest place I can find poults.

Having been there, it's a very draining job. I completely understand. It takes a lot out of you, compounded by being continually short staffed, not getting enough non-contact time, and not being paid enough for the amount of effort and love you put into the kids. :hugs

Yesterday was my first visit and it went fine, s he gave me some exercises to do for my hand and put me in a compression glove. My hand has been swollen since the stitches came out.

:hugsYesterday when we got our kiddos down it was completely silent. The preschoolers had gone down to the gym. It felt like the calm before the storm. We enjoyed it for the few minutes it lasted as there’s always commotion at the daycare.
