Lucky us, sunshine and 50s today!
Good morning, Blooie.
Lord, it was cold, but it was a very exciting game. Bottom of the ninth inning and they were down 4/1. They rallied and tied the game. Game went two more innings, and bottom of the eleventh with two outs they scored to win the game. Grandson, as a freshman, played shortstop and did a great job. At bat he had a single and a long pop fly that started the rally bottom of the ninth. They were playing a second game as we left.I wish I could come join you to watch a game.![]()

What a beautiful memory ♥ and what a beautiful bride you were. Happy almost anniversary!Feeling a bit mushy tonight, and missing Ma and Linda more than usual.Memories come flooding back, and if you’ll indulge me I’d like to share a very special one.
Fifty-four years ago this week, Ma and I were shopping. We weren’t after bread or milk, we were shopping for my wedding dress. That cold, snowy February day, Dad dropped Ma and me off in downtown Sioux Falls in the morning and said he’d pick us up at 5, or if we were done earlier to just call him at the shop. We didn’t have much time - the wedding was in less than a week, but we’d had to wait until dad got paid because he’d already had to pay for our reception site in advance. (Anderson’s Truck Stop drove a hard bargain!) Ma and I started our quest at Fantles’, where we found a beautiful gown. At over $100.00, it was a little too spendy but Ma told me to try it on anyway, just to see if it was a good style for me. It was okay, but it would have needed alterations and we were too close to the date to get that done, even if we could have afforded the dress. We also had to outfit my little sisters and my brother, so we had to be rather frugal. Linda and I had already found her bridesmaid’s dress and veil, and had bought that a few days before so she was set.
We wandered in and out of shops most of the morning. Not a lot of them even carried wedding gowns, but we shopped anyway. Ma found a little gray suit for Ron, who was my ring bearer, and a frilly dress for Bev. But we found no wedding gown for the bride, and although we did find a dress for Lori we left it there and planned to go back for it if we didn’t find anything we liked better. I think Ma also bought herself a beautiful hat. She said she didn’t need a dress because she had the perfect suit in her closet.
Our feet were getting wet and cold, so we popped into Woolworth’s for a cup of coffee and a bite to eat at the lunch counter. We ordered a hot hamburger and two forks, Ma got her coffee and we each had a chocolate malt. And I found my dress! It was everything I wanted - simple lines, a little beading but not too much, and a soft lace overlay. The fingertip length veil even came with it! It was a pillbox hat, covered with lace, sporting a little bow that matched the bow on the waist of the gown, and there was beading around the edge of the veil. I tried the gown and veil on immediately and they fit like they were made for me. Even better was the price for both....it came to a grand total of $40.00, plus $5.00 for the shoes. I was in wedding heaven! After we ate, we poked around the store for a bit longer. Ma bought a couple of guppies to add to the fish bowls at home and then we called Dad.
Like every bride, I thought I’d never looked more beautiful. With every transfer to a new duty station, that gown was carefully packed into a moving box and securely padded, and a safe new place found for the gown’s white box in each new home. When our daughters were a little older, I dreamed of seeing one of them wearing it someday and feeling as beautiful as I had on my wedding day.
Well, that dream came true. I told them one Halloween when they were scrounging for costumes that there was a box with an old dress in it that they could cut up. I guess I should have been more specific. Oh, yes they did!! All I had left of my wedding gown was the veil’s netting. For decades it hung on my bedroom wall draped around a photo of Linda in her bridesmaid’s dress and Ma adjusting my veil on my wedding day. The veil had faded and yellowed and most of the beads had fallen off, so just a month or so ago I finally bit the bullet and got rid of it. But the memories are still as special as that long ago shopping day when Ma and I celebrated the perfect $40.00 bargain at Woolworth’s, over a hamburger patty, mashed taters and gravy.
