The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Good morning everyone. gave a wonderful day. 🌹
Good morning Mark, you also!
Good morning all. Have a good weekend.

@sourland I hope you had a great birthday!

@DigMyChicks glad your hubs is ok and on the mend. Great news on the repairs as well!

The news said the entire southern region is under a heatwave right now. Stay safe and cool if you’re in it! Our temps are going up to 110+ for the next week with overnight lows in the 90s. I feel guilty for keeping chickens about this time every year.
Good morning IM, thank you!

I hope it doesn’t last long. We had one day of 103 and it was hot.
Good morning. Had a great day yesterday. Amazing how tiring a little change in routine can be. :lau NJ summer is back in full force.
Hi Sour!
Oops, my bad. Glad he's doing well at 83!

The surprise is on them when you aren't surprised ;)

Good. Tell him to stay on the couch and off the equipment, he needs to give it a few days!!!
Easier said then done. 😳

Good morning, IM. 🦋 I feel the same. Every year, I say no more chickens. And then, there are more chicks. I have a couple of 4 year old buff orps that are
having a rough time this year. 2 of my more heavily feathered brahma hens, and one legbar are all showing signs of heat stress.

Good morning Janie. It’s so hard to watch them struggle. I wouldn’t ever leave my dogs locked outside because I think it’s cruel, it’s hard not to feel that way about the chickens too.

I lost a few heavily feathered birds to heat in the past, it really is the biggest reason I try to stick to the Nn. Fewer feathers so they tend to handle it a bit better. Although the rooster with huge comb seems to be handling it just fine :idunno

I'm trying to convince myself to stick to naked necks, welsummers, and crested cream legbars. I sure love my feathery footed brahmas and langshan though. And the orpingtons. Oddly enough, my black langshans never seem to have any heat stress. My mixes ee/brahma & ee/langshan don't have much trouble either. And roosters always seem to do well.

I didn’t care for feathered feet, too messy for me to deal with. My son and DIL have a bunch of Nn but their roo is an Australorp. None of their flock seems to struggle too much, even the mixes.

I had 3 blue Australorps, not mixes and very large and fluffy, that all succumbed to heat and that hurt. The roo my son has was their brother and he does fine. Crazy.
