It looks like it's healing okay and it doesn't look like anything is wrong, but there are still stitches. It would be nice if the vet would return my calls

You may be able to remove them yourself. You will need a pair of small scissors and tweezers, and maybe someone to hold a magnifying glass if your vission is like mine. Just clip the knots and pull the stitches out.
If they stay in too long they can become irritated and even cause infection.
Your vet's office should have scheduled a follow-up appointment.
