The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

DH just came in and told me all the plants I put in the 4 backyard planters yesterday have been dug up. We have a real squirrel problem here so I'm sure it was those. Does anyone have a good way of keeping them from digging up plants? I'd really hate to lose my flowers :(

We're supposed to see the 80's today, that's a little too warm for me but better than it will be in about a month.

Is your snow all gone now?
80’s is too warm for me too. We’re supposed to be mid 70’s today. I have my windows open already. I should get some screens on, so I don’t get a bird in here. Then I’ll have to let a cat in to catch it. 😆It’s thundering right now. All snow is gone. We got a random 2” the other day. It melted overnight though.

That sucks! I wish I had an answer for you. My sister has issues with chipmunks.

Thanks DMC. I enjoy watching the squirrels chase each other around but they are so destructive! I don't know if I'll be able to keep flowers in the backyard or not, guess I'll see how it goes from here.

I've been reading up on squirrel deterrents and am going to try a couple of these:

Sprinkle either cayenne pepper or garlic powder or coffee grounds around the flowers. Those can also be mixed with water in a spray bottle to apply after watering or rain.

Plant rosemary or marigolds close by.

Set up decoy predators like plastic owls or rubber snakes.

I can do the 1st one today but will have to make a trip to the store for the other 2. I'll let you all know how any of these work out.

I hope one of them works. Flowers aren’t cheap.

No they are not! Seeds aren't cheap any more either. I had $5 alone in seeds in a couple of those pots and $74 worth of flowers. If the squirrels demolish them, I'm going to artificial flowers (and hope I catch their surprised squirrely faces)
