Dsgard your Bluejay quilt is gorgeous. Our blue jay population has been way down for years, I know Nile virus wiped out a lot of them. When they finally pop up around here it's well worth dropping everything to watch them. We use to have large enough populations of them to cause a lot of grief. I think Cardinals must be immune we see them a lot.

We do not have bluejays around where I live either. Up in the mountains there are probably some though. I did not know the Nile virus affected jays. Hmmmm I know we had an issue with some of the bald eagles getting it.

We have zero blue jays up here.... Only stellar jays and camp jays.

We supposedly have stellar jays in Utah too but I haven't seen any. Will have to keep my eyes open the next time I go up into the mountains.

My parents were raised in Nebraska but now live in Texas. My father told me that growing up the blue jay was his favorite bird until he saw one robbing a nest of a newly hatched robin. He said he didn't know they did that kind of thing. I didn't either, but I do know that the other birds scatter from the feeder if one comes near....except the flickers, the blue jays give way to them.

Here in the Sacramento Valley, we have scrub Jays in the Valley and Blue Jays in the mountains.

Chickens will catch west nile and not show symptoms. They are used to see if a place hase west nile.

In California, West Nile has killed off most of the Magpies.

I think so.... But I don't know.

I DO know that our mosquitos can NOT carry malaria.
