I went to Walmart this afternoon for a few things. I get some scrap wood and pallets behind the garden center (with permission of course) every time they bring a new truck of plants. I am hoarding these for my bigger coop I am wanting to build. Even though it was raining like crazy I went back there to check. I saw a shelf like they keep the plants on that had a pallet like bottom, sturdy framing and several wooden shelves. I immediately saw this as my side wall:) I asked the manager and he said sure, take it if you can fit it in the van because since the wood was a little rougher it was a liability to reuse because of potential splinters. I could not get it in there at first but I was NOT going to let this get away. So I ended up folding down the middle seats, taking out the back seats and folding them up and putting them up against the back of the front seats, and pushing and wiggling until I got it in there

And yes there were people shopping in the garden center looking at me like I was insane for being in the pouring rain trying to wiggle a huge shelf into my van. But with the shelves it will be perfect nesting boxes and I am going to take the top shelf off and make a roost there. This thing is 4 foot tall, 4 foot wide, and 2 foot deep. I came home all excited and told hubby I got myself the perfect mothers day gift and he was expecting me to say I bought something and looked quite relieved when I told him what it was. I guess as excited as I was he probably thought I bought myself diamonds, lol. So now I have one side wall, plywood to cover the back of it, pallets for the other two longer side walls and boards to cover the spaces between the slats (from the longer scrap wood behind walmart) so all I need is on for the other side wall and a door. And the other good part is that they are rebuilding the church down the street, about a 5 minute walking distance, because it got burnt down and there is lots of plywood in the scrap pile that the guy told me I could have. Now if this rain would stop so I can get those big pieces toted home. Or maybe he would cut them to the size I need if I ask nicely, hmmmm.......

Good luck with that. That's great..reusing things that will end up in the trash. You are a rescuer. I tried to do that but everytime I went to check for wood the place was empty. Just found a few things. I have not much patience so ...I'll buy the wood I still need. Half I rescued.

My mothers gift for my mother was chickens. I ordered from ideal chicks and they arrived a few days before mother's day. In that order I ordered 2 more chicks for me. But they arrived at my grandmother's house and she got jeaulous and asked she also wanted chickens so I gave my 2 to her. But my aunt told me grandma wanted more chickens so I made another order and in that one I ordered for myself 5 instead of the 2 I originally planed. But my grandma fell in love with the breeds I picked for myself ( she told me she wanted RIRs and leghorns) and she end up with one of my EE and I end up with one of her leghorns. well....made her happy so was worth it.

Sounds like your Grandma wants "everything she sees" like the song.

LOL.....yes. She has hens...really old hens. And she can't go take care of them because of health problems (my uncle is now). So she feels useless and bored. One cat gave birth at her balcony and she gave the cat so much attention that the cat left with the kitten. And my grandma was angry she left. The chickens help her to feel needed. She checks them often and moves them around the house. AND FEEDS THEM ALL THE TIME. LOL. good thing. With the starting alzeimer she needs to be entertained. And the chickens work like a charm. She is happy again.
