This is a poll. An unofficial one. What breed makes the perfect pet duck. Based on the following; health, personality, ease of care. Laying eggs and other such labor intensive duties I classify under working ducks, and not to be included in this poll. Thanks Tom

Tom, I have three breeds of perfect pet ducks

Buff, Runner, and Cayuga. I also have a few adopted Buffs who are a bit more standoffish, but I love them just the same. They are sweet, in a shy sort of way.

The way I look at it, the way they are raised is what makes them perfect pets. Good nutrition, a safe environment, and people who know how to make the ducks feel secure by their (the people's) behavior, like not cornering the ducks, speaking gently to them all the time, never making sudden threatening motions, offering treats, spending time near them, sitting so you are not towering over them so much. Just that kind of thing.

@amiga thank you for the information. I think more people should be aware of their body language among other creatures especially those smaller. Personally, I think an entire book could be written on just that subject. Your ducks sound very well loved and cared for. I hope to hear about your book soon!!!!!!! Please look for ducks1959. Good day for now Tom

Good day, Tom, nice to visit with you here.

Yes, I love those ducks. They have been good to me, and good for me. A friend once told me he did not see how anyone could stay depressed around this flock.

You are absolutely right about the volumes that could be written on communication between species. It was Duckyfromoz and a few others here, years ago, who advised me on some specifics, though I already knew a few things just based on my experience with animals. Duckyfromoz told me about not approaching from above, and making gentle noises before coming into sight. I read somewhere else that cornering a duck is terrifying to it.

Take care.

I can only speak to my little flock... I have two cayugas, two rouens, and a kiki campbell. The cayugas are a bit standoff-ish, but nice in their own way. The rouens are much more friendly with one pretty much being a pet; she was actually running between my legs like a cat would the other day. The kaki is a jerk. Doesn't want anything to do with me plus it doesn't seem the other ducks like her much either. I plan on culling my herd based on temperament, so once I get some babies the kaki is going in my belly

Thank you for the input I will add it to my poll. And GREAT LOOKING DOG!!! Tom

Thanks! She's a sweet and wussy dog. The ducks hiss at her when she gets close and it sends her running

That's a good thing tho that they stand up for themselves to what they see as a predator.
