Hi all
big_smile.png

I have just joined this forum as I have finally decided to go ahead and get a couple of hens to lay eggs to eat.

No doubt I have a lot to learn, which I am sure this forum will have lots of interesting information about.

I live in Melbourne (Australia) in the inner city area.

Anyone have any suggestions which are the best hens for a situation such as I have described?

Thanks in advance

I've not really got any suggestions-- it's really personal choice. There are lots of good brown egg layers that lay big brown yummy eggs!! I don't know a thing about white egg layers, but that's because they don't interest me much-- the white eggs remind me of grocery store eggs!!
You will learn a LOT here and I hope you find your time here enjoyable!

I agree totally with Mahroni - although there are several wonderful breeds that would fit your purpose, my choice for you would also be the Australorp. Here's a quick paragraph about them:

Australorps are the Australian take on the Orpington breed. They are calm and friendly, and excellent layers of light brown eggs. The Australorp's exceptionally soft, shiny black plumage has hints of green and purple in the sunlight. Peaceful and dignified, Australorps are an absolutely delightful bird which we highly recommend to anyone who wants a pet chicken that lays dependably.

Greetings to the Pink!

You're very welcome here; there are MANY wonderful, friendly folks who'll soon have you wanting chickens of every breed, and will coerce you into building coops and runs on every square inch of land/space available! Enjoy the madness!
