My 4, 16 week Bovans hens finally arrived at the feed store on the 4th after hitchhiking their way up highway 97 all by themselves. Little chicken suitcases in hand and a sign saying "South Cariboo or Bust!"
They were awfully tired after nearly 3 weeks on the road, but have settled into their new coop and run complex with alacrity and aplomb. They were incarcerated for the first 16 hours and released yesterday at around 11am. I let all find their own way out and soon enough all 4 were happily scrounging around their new spread. One even caught a big fat worm! Another ate her own egg (!) but measures are already enacted to dissuade such horrors. It should be said this is my first foray into the wonderful world of Chickens. So far, so good, touch wood... 3 eggs on the first day ain't bad I reckon.
Actually things are going most swimmingly, with all 4 spending lots of idle time all sprawled out in the little pits they dig into the floor of the greenhouse and sleep a few minutes in the warm sun, all puffed up, legs and wings at bizarre angles like they just fell off a tall building and splattered in the dirt. At first I thought they were having some kind of fit but it soon became evident they were having a ball and decidedly not in distress.
As suggested by one of the fine denizens of this venerable place, I put the feeders back in the coop at ~ dinner time and when the sun set it was just a matter of opening the big main door to the coop and they all went back inside, with zero fuss from me. I must say how relieved I was that my girls all like their new digs so much they go in and out quite a lot and seem to know it's time for a bedtime snack and lights out and happily scramble back in without trouble.
I Found all 4 huddled together at one end of the roost this morning, all puffed up and dozing even with me scooping poop. They are all again today wandering about making gentle noises, poking through the grass and leaves scrounging for bugs.
If I didn't know any better I'd say they were pretty darned happy chickens. I am delighted. Many thanks for all the excellent tips and advice available all through this site. This place has been an invaluable resource.
