My quail journey started when I was gifted six quail in November of last year.
I gave away two males, but one female died within a few weeks.
One female started laying eggs, but died soon after. The remaining female started laying, once she was the only one, so it began there, one female, and one male.
Several incubations later, and I was up to 25 quail, even after selling several of my hatches.
Alas, the one girl that gave me the most fertilized eggs, has moved up to that big coop in the sky.
I could tell she was on her way out today, so I moved her from the dirt floor of the enclosure, and put her beneath our blueberry bush, in the warm sunshine.
She passed about an hour later.
