It sounds like you need Silkies!!! My Buff Orpingtons are pretty quiet and are very good layers. Um, How about Cochins? They are a very sweet chicken and lay pretty well for a bantam and and very quiet.

Revisiting this thread to say thanks for all the suggestions

Hubby and I really appreciated all the input! We decided to go with 3 Black Australorps, mostly because they're docile and friendly and quiet, which in our very limited experience is all true. And they lay a lot of eggs, and they're ok in really cold weather. When we visited the farm that had our chicks (to put down a deposit and choose them, at 8 weeks old or thereabouts) a few of their adult Australorps came right up to us to check us out, friendly-like, never said a word, and two of them laid eggs while we were there and *never* sang an egg song. Not even a chirp! Nothing!

One of our teenagers learned very quickly to enjoy being picked up and petted, so that's another mark in the 'friendly and docile' catagory.

We're hoping that our teenagers will learn from their older, wiser 'aunties' (not moms, unfortunately, the adults were beautiful!) and stay as quiet and friendly as the adults were.

When we get them, they'll be about 15 weeks old, born on March 9 or thereabouts, and we'll take them home on June 26, in theory (see my thread in the Coops section for more info about that!).

I would like a Silkie, I think they're very pretty birds. Maybe later on
