It's been a bad couple of days. The arctic blast has cost me some lives. I'm sure I'm not the only one who lost animals to this, so i figured i'd start a discussion on it. It got down to -8 without the windchill. with the windchill i think it got down to -16. Anyway i lost three rabbits, i had to dub my best rooster's comb because of the frost bite, and my 14 year old pygmy goat froze to death. anyway, how did everyone else fare?

We got down to 5 below last night with wind chills in excess of 20 below. all my chickens are doing fine. We did put the ducks in the garage because the silly buggers wouldnt go into their house

Bless your heart, I will shut up about using my lunch break to go chop ice out of my animals water. Here in east Texas we just don't get much cold weather. Certainly not like what you are getting slammed with. It was 70 on Monday, then 13 degrees on Tuesday night. For us, that is extreme. I am sorry for your losses.

It was cold but not as bad as what y'all had out there. Everything seems to have came through it okay here.

Very sad. So sorry for your losses.

We broke the record at -13*F this morning. Windchill was -25*F!

Pretty tough on my older creatures. My rooster's coop is my horse trailer in the barn. -13* outside. -5* in the barn. 0* in the trailer/coop. He was cold, but seems to be doing fine.

Hope you have no more losses.

Since my coop is in one of my stalls in my barn, I ended up buying another heat lamp and put up blankets and towels all the way around the coop to block out drafts. That seemed to help, but it's so doggone cold!!! I can't wait to let them outside but doesn't look like I will for another couple of days.

We're supposed to get the worst of it tonight & tomorrow...so cold & mixed precipitation = nasty!!

Sorry for your losses 88Haywood

I am sorry for your losses...

I never hear of rabbits freezing to death? I had a doe once have a litter when it was -20F (not including windchill), healthiest litter I ever had. I guess it boils down to what they are used to.

I agree. We've lost some to the HEAT in past summers. I have always been of the belief that chickens and rabbits tolerate the cold FAR better than they do the heat. Sorry to hear that yours died!

My birds have been doing great. My 8 week old chicks were complaining loudly about their solid water this afternoon. Well toughen up guys, it didn't get above 25 all day so you'd better drink it while it's "hot"
