Well a few of you know about the 7 silkies I got a while back from Mike Lee. It was his culls out of buff and lavender mixes. I had one I was sure was a blue . But .. as I noticed today when I brought them outside to get some sun (they have been cooped up in the red light, hard to see colors under that thing.) And the supposed blue silkie is changing color drasticly as it feathers out.

Its what seems like barred markings. The white markings are tipping each feather in a very cuckoo way. Here are some photos. Enjoy and give me your opinions. Remember they only have lavender and buff silkies.

I am still new so can't add anything useful but lol that will be interesting to see how it turns out

btw, off subject but, did you get your orps?

It definately does not have the down of a blue chick. It's a mixed color, so it's not going to be anything pure, but it looks to be the beginings of a faint grey pattern. It will likely develop rust in the feathers as it matures.

No it is a pure silkie. Its not mixed bred. The parents were a project he was working on. Mixing lavender into his buffs to get a purer buff cause lavender delutes the black pigmentations (from what I understand). Its siblings are turning out to be buff. Couple of them blue partridge it seems. Hard to tell right now. The older siblings look like this. And the ones the same age are even farther below.

and then this one which is the same age as the one this thread is made about. its really pure buff looking. No off marks at all.

I never ended up getting them. My hubby didnt get out of bed the day I was suppose to go get them (He works night shift) and then we just havent got around to doing it. Probably a good thing. I needed a cage for my babies coming out on the 4 week escape from the brooder room.

Yes, I know you meant a mixed color, not a mixed breed. That bird is obviously a pure silkie, but it will not be a pure color, which is why I said it would not be pure.

Crossing self blue with buff isn't going to work too well since lav is a recessive gene and you can't just cross a hom lav buff to a non lav buff and get buffs displaying lav. You probably mean blue? I know there are breeders that cross their buffs with splashes to get the black replaced by blue. All it does is makes the black in the tail, wings, etc, blue so it blends in with the buff better.

Well considering they breed only buff and lavender Im sure they do know they need a buff with the lavender gene. They use lavender cause its a lighter diluter then blue is. Thats their project though I dont know everything Im just saying what Ive been told. And I knew these wouldnt be perfect varitions when I got them. Cause they were culls. But I do find this chick quite interesting cause its colors shouldnt even be happening with what it was supposedly mixed with.

Lavender has no effect when only one copy is present (Lav lav). When two copies are present (lav lav), it dilutes black pigment to a pale blue; however it also dilutes buff to a pale straw: isabel.

This is how the porcelain silkies are bred. (Buff plus lavlav) If the bird is buff, only one copy of lav is present.

It is possible to have both blue and lavender genes in the same bird. The first chicks are too dark to be lavender IMO; my guess is your first set of chicks are Blbl Lavlav or Blbl LavLav.

I think what you are seeing at the tips of the feathers is incomplete lacing (from the blue bred to non-blues): Pgpg Mlml

Appreciate it. The better I understand it the more I will know what to do with these little guys. Or to even call them.

I know some people were telling me that they were mixed buff with lavender and that ment they didn't have any lavender in them. But I wasn't trying to say they did or didn't. I'm sure Mike has buff birds with the lavender gene in them since this has been a project of his for a looooong time. All I know about these 7 birds he gave me, is what he told me. And all he told me was that they were part of his project's culls where he was working with the lavender gene in buff birds to get them with out markings. Cause he wants a buff line with out any markings at all.

Do you think that the little laced chick would be a good addition to my project?
