Welcome from Georgia!!! I'm not really sure which breed is the best, but I know some people use Great Pyrenees. Good luck with what ever you choose!!

For large acreage, find an LGD breed like Pyrs, etc. For smaller acreage, research the English Shepherd, to see if this breed might be a good match for you. That's what I have, with great success. You do need to give them some training and they require more human companionship than an LGD. But, most are great farm dogs and good with poultry. If you do decide on an ES, make sure that the individual dog has the correct temperament for being with poultry.

Some people like Anatolians or a mix of them with great Pyrenees - they are better for large acreage.

Usually people get very young pups and have them grow up with the chickens - they still need training and guidance.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Try and avoid bird dogs. (Poodles, spaniels, etc) Pyrenees sound good for chickens. Some people say boxers are good too.

But all dogs have that natural instinct to hunt. Some dogs are different than others. I have a poodle who doesn't bother the chickens. While my grandparents have poodles who are always trying to kill the chickens. Train the dog well. Teach him to leave it. Then after he knows leave it, start putting the chickens all over him. You may have to put a muzzle on him when you do this. Most dogs get very scared when you do this. They then end up protecting the chickens or just leavening them alone.

Defiantly check out this link http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2012/11/basic-chicken-etiquette-for-family-dog.html

Good luck!

I have no idea. But Mountain Peeps X2 Most dogs see chickens as dinner. So be very careful with dogs around your birds and train the dog well.

Good luck and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. The best guard dog for poultry, not matter what the breed, is a well trained one. Many BYC members can tell you, to their sorrow, that dogs and poultry generally do not mix well. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting a well trained dog for guarding your poultry.
