And northern fowl mites eggs....which were also on the feathers of my chickens when they arrived:

DOH. I just realized... I have a broody that's been setting forever (totally can't break her) and she was acting like she had mites yesterday. And these little "scabs" around her eyes... that look exactly like that. Time to fire up the burn pile and get me some more ashes!

Also time for a much better look at her. I pick up her fat rear end (well not fat now after setting so long but anyway...) and make sure she gets it out there every day. Well, I have little else to do sometimes..

My bantam frizzle is like your hen wants to brood all the time, well I finally took matters into my own 2 hands and removed Her nest box, yes hers she hasn't even bothered to get into any of the others, lol But she is now officially broke. I had a mite problem a while back treated first with Premise spray, then treated all the flock with Frontline, then found this thread so I retreated with Neem and used Nustock on my birds, went in last night and looked for mites, found none, I can now breathe a sigh of relief. We will be using the wood stove for the first time this weekend so I'kll have a steady stream of ashes, I did have some left from last winter still in the stove i mixed them with some sand. Lice and mites sure are nasty to deal with.

So how do you get rid of the mites around her eyes? I know you can put a bag over the bird with the head sticking out and shift the ash in the bag......or powder poof.....but if they're around the eyes what then? Haven't had to deal with mice or lites but I sure want to know what to do right quick if they appear.

I can't even tell you all the things I've tried to break this girl. The one thing that works with every other hen I've ever had doesn't work with her: the Broody Buster cage. Up off the ground wire bottom with lots of air circulation under there. Nope. 10 days = still broody. I've another that all I have to do is what you did, remove that nest. But most need the broody buster. Not this one. NOTHING, and I mean nothing, will break her. Cold water baths, ice in the nest, pulling off the nest, removing the nest, putting in the cage, she'll happily sit through it all. And that's when they're most susceptible to mites, when setting like that.

And no, don't even suggest I give her eggs. With all the tenacity, she's in the end a horrid mother. The only thing she does NOT do is purposefully kill the chicks. A cull? In a practical flock, yes, she would be.

I intend to dust her well with the ashes then put some of my home made "nustock" stuff (carefully) around the eyes. I mixed powdered sulfur with mineral oil and a few drops of pine oil. I'll report back when I see how it works.

If you can get some Nu stock[feed store, online] and very carefully rub it in around her eyes being very careful not to get it in her eyes, they'd probably drop right off. I've had mite out break 2X and never saw any around the eyes. mostly around the vent area. I did read on BYC of someone saying their chicken had stick tight fleas around their eyes, I've never seen or heard of stick tight fleas till I read it on BYC.

Thanks BeeK, I will continue to treat with the Nu stock, I have been using it 2X a week do I need to apply it more often?
Sounds like a good number to me....on the tube I think they advise treatment regimens/times but I never read those. It's a nurse thing

I'm not going to play with a chicken butt more than twice a week, it just goes against my life philosophy.
Two questions, since I didn't remember reading it somewhere - does the FF have to be covered (loosely, I remember that) and in a dark place to start fermenting? Please forgive me if it's somewhere and I missed it - not much time to be online these days.
Nah...mine was just in a bucket in the coop with the lid snapped down on one side and left gapped on the other.
How 'bout a photo or 2?

I'll try to get a few when I get done rearranging the furniture....it ain't much to look at anyway. Probably the ugliest little coop I've ever had, but I have found in my life that looks don't mean much when it comes to function.

I'd use the Nustock....make for ugly chickens for bit but they will get some relief.

I had never seen or heard of these stick tight fleas either....must be a regional thing. I bet the NS would take care of those little buggers too!
