Flock Update: They have been getting FF for a bit over a month now and free ranging for the most part. I was a bit disappointed when the egg count dropped about 10 days ago or so. 'Specially since everyone was talking about how their girls were laying on FF and the 'production' remained up. Well, I had just blown it off to the shortening days and that they were taking a rest. Yesterday I found out why my count had dropped (after brief paranoia of bad things that cause chikens to stop laying)....the dreaded Secret Nest....under the first front porch step....18 eggs all piled up thanks to at least three to four of the girls.

...just like kids playing outside, they have been too lazy to walk all the way back to the coops to lay. Anyway the eggs all sank in cold water...
SO they have NOT slowed down laying...the sun finally came out and I was able to see how shiney their feathers are and no more foot problems, all seems well for now....and now I know where to look when the egg count seems off again.

you could keep them cooped until later in the morning, when you think the majority have layed their egg, then let them out.

Hooray, hooray! Bee's Blog of the Day!

Y'all be sure to subscribe to the blog so I don't have to keep cluttering up this thread... unless anyone wants me to. Up to you folks! Do I keep posting these here or would you prefer to just keep peeking at the blog on your own when you want to?

All the above plus being the most consistent egg layers (when they're not brooding) way longer than most other breeds. I've had a large variety of breeds in past years and my silkies are the ones that I chose to be with me in my older  age. (71)

Hi aoxa! Love your input!
:thumbsup

I think too many people feel like they are not chickens at all, when in fact they are a very OLD breed of chicken ;)

Just a little update on the FF use :
I was finding too much left stuck on the bottom of the pans I was using to feed, so I started just feeding them on the ground, outside the coop. Now they finish every bit. They don't scratch and make the huge mess I expected, like they do with dry.
The new "wealth" of eggs has continued, 4 eggs a day, up from 2 all late-summer/early fall. There may have been 5 yesterday, as I found one in a makeshift nest in the broody pen this morning that was ice cold, so I am guessing it was from yesterday.
I haven't noticed anything weird about the poos, but then I haven't exactly examined them.
Everyone seems really happy to eat the FF (besides forage, there isn't a choice) and they all seem to be very well.
It is too soon to report any change in condition, but I am so thrilled about the eggs coming again!!!

Merlin, the kitten is also enjoying his pilfered ration of the FF and seems fine and fit. The weirdo

You beat me to this post!! I was going to post my observations with FF and my biggest is if I leave it in the feeding bowl the girls will barely touch it. If I dump it on their usual feeding plate they seem to eat a lot more!! Mine still definetly dig through and kick it about looking for the best bits ... I don't know why nobody else's hens seem to do this but at least now I know they won't eat if they don't like the container!! Picky hens!! :D

They eat it if they are hungry. FF gives them so many nutrients they will eat less. That is a good thing. Less money, less feed, healthier birds.

Just sent Bulldogma a message...I love it - a place you can search and EASILY find all the info you know is in here somewhere but would take forever to find. Now we have a place we can send a friend when they're looking for specific info when they don't have time to wade through the whole threads.

I am MORE THAN EXCITED!!
