Aoxa - are you getting the sheep for meat?

No, pets, fibre and milk after they are bred. :)

I have noticed that since I shot the two dogs from down the street the rest of them that are always out in the road and running around loose, not even a collar on, are now tied up ;-) Word gets around.

This tends to help things a bit and lets one know the neighbors can indeed learn, which is hard to believe at times.  Unfortunately, it also has a little backfire when you have heartless folks with dogs they no longer want or sick dogs they don't want to treat who will dump off the dog in your area, knowing you will kill it for them.  This has happened here...who in their right mind dumps a dog and who dumps them in an area in which they are sure to die?  Those cowardly and sniveling people who will go right back to the puppy mill or humane society and get another dog until they tire of that one too.

What's worse is the humane society will give them a dog because they promise to keep it inside...what a lovely criteria that means absolutely nothing in determining if one will give a dog a good home or not.  :smack
love the barn ,wish i had one like it :D

X 2!  Aoxa, you have beautiful property and facilities for your animals!  I simply love the pics that you got of the sheep and Clem...I think she reacted very well.  Some dogs would have given that sheep a lesson in whose boss but Clem is young and unsure of herself just yet but at least she didn't growl or snap at them.  The sheep are lovely and I'm glad you got what you wanted...one can only advise but each person must choose their own journey and this is right and proper in the world.  Even the livestock world.

My sheep would only butt Jake if he stole one of their apples and then they would chase him down to butt him.  One day he got behind me to eat the stolen apple(mind you, the ground is practically iced with tons of apples but they must fight over this particular apple  ) and the sheep were trying to butt him while he was hurriedly scarfing their apple.  I did not interfere but did inform the gals, "You know that when he gets done he is gonna take yer face off, don't ya?"  Dogs rule right under Mama on my land, then cat, then sheep, then chickens.  And, of course, they just had to push it...and as soon as he was done he was up and snapping at them and they were running like the hounds of hades were in hot pursuit!  :lau

The next day you see them holding real still while he licks their ears...he's a big licker, is the Jake.

You are gonna have so much fun watching these sheep/dog interactions that you will be walking around with a grin on your face every time you do farm chores..it's a never ending source of amusement!
Thanks Bee! :D Yes I think she reacted quite well. Koda (corgi mix) did not like them invading his space at all. We'll have to work on that. Though he did not hurt them. I just did not like his reaction. A bit of growling involved. This from the dog who will back off when a broody hen attacks him

The sheep were licking Clem, and she was fine with them when they weren't head butting her.

The sheep have already had their share of apples and pumpkins. They've eaten pumpkins from their previous home all fall - they have a pumpkin patch - and it's their absolute favourite treat. :D If only our pumpkins weren't so frozen right now! I put one in there, and they are nibbling at it despite it's frozen state. :p

Yes...I say we all load up in the buggy in the spring and visit Aoxa's land and barn and slobber all over it with envy. Just a mass visit to run our hands over the barn and lovely animals there.... :D
:gig You guys are too much! lol We love it as well, though I am actually looking forward to snow. Something to cover up the lack of colour :) We were out all day yesterday taking down pens and getting everything ready for winter. There seems to be more than enough room in the one part of the barn for the chickens. I have moved the geese in with the sheep at night - as they need a deep bucket to wash their bills and they also eat the timothy hay.

After picture. We put up two more roosts. In reality, only 20 birds were moved from the sheep part of the barn to this side with the others..

Nesting boxes (4 more behind grow out pen)

Betty the wild turkey greeting me on the deck. She likes to escort me to and from the barn. Make sure no roosters try to get me :lol

Has to be my favourite bird on this farm. She has such character and sass.

Yep.. This rooster stepped too close to me.. :gig

"Stupid newbie question" time. One of my roosters broke a nail off. We just gave him a foot soak to check out the wound. It broke off at the base, not pulled out, which is a good thing. I cleaned it up as best I could, applied a little NS and taped a fingertip bandaid on it, lol. I chuckle because it looks cute, I've never put a bandaid on a chicken before. He is already back on the roost.

My question is, should I remove the bandaid before morning, or leave it on til it falls off or he pulls it off? Will the other chickens peck at it? That is my main concern.

I wouldn't have bothered with the band aid. Though, now it's on - I'd leave it until it fell off. What colour is it? If it's red - I'd take it off. They will peck at anything red.

Good job with what you did though! :)

Ok here goes. I'm not an OT in chicken years but I'm an OT in life years. If your dog loves the dogs next door or down the street, then it's not a Livestock Guardian Dog. It will play with it's friends rather than run off the animals that do not belong on your property. End of story. No if's, ands, or buts. That's the way it is. Your great doggums that you love so much is NOT protecting you or your livestock if it just loves and plays with other dogs. I don't care what you say. It's not. NO BUTS.

And with a rooster. Either he's nice and you keep him, or you kill him. None of this "I love him and don't want to kill him or give him to someone that will and don't' know what to do" BS. You either do what needs doing or you give it to someone that will. I get really tired of reading threads like this on BYC. "Oh no, I love him he's so pretty! No one can kill him! What do I do?" Then said person doesn't listen to what they need to do. Sheesh.

The coloris the tan skin skin-color. With white first aid paper tape. I'm still kind of giggling because of husband... He was holding the rooster under one arm and reading the tape with other. He said, "don't worry, Junior. This is the gentle paper tape" like it says on the package, and talking baby talk while I was doctoring this rooster. XD haha!

Maybe I'll remove the bandaid on the morning before sunup. It seems quite sore, he was limping on it quite a bit, but getting around ok.

Thanks!

Also- I am pointedly ignoring all the cute sheep and goat photos. My friend had me *this* close to getting bottle lambs last year. I must resist the temptation! I am allergic to everything but feathers...

Should be fine then. That story makes me giggle.
