Aoxa - very cool! It would be neat if we could get a video together that shows how the setup works - the holes in the inside bucket, etc.
Thank you VERY much for sharing this!

Oh... and I have a lead on some Silkie hens, so we may do a family road trip this weekend and let my kiddo pick one out. Shhhhhhhhhhh... there will soon be aliens among us!
I'd be willing to take better videos if someone wants to narrate. I hate hearing my own voice, so that's not gonna be me. I'll get the fiance to help by videoing so I can get a steady hand while I stir. Couldn't focus right.. Next time music will be off.

This bucket has been at it for 48 hours.

You'll have to update us on the surprise silkie.. Put a spoiler alert.

Because don't want Bee to see it

Aoxa you can change the audio after the fact. You can turn the mx down or off and export the quicktime with the new and improved audio....

That is very interesting! Where would one find ginger beer? Never heard of it.

sorry I forgot to quote before putting up recipe ,didn't mean to upset anyone x being off topic big time ,got attacked when offering some advice on using wood ash on another thread - poisoning animals & it shouldn't be used on any living animal .
didn't realise ppl could be so touchy over little things .
guess I go back to lurking and not try to contribute

I hate the sound of my own voice too - LOL. I think most folks do. Yeah - get the significant other to help if you can, because I'd love to see the whole setup! And that spoiler alert thing is cool! How do you do that... never mind - just found the little black box up there buy the quote thing. Too cool!

LOL, Pete - on this thread I think we pretty much all expect to see a variety of recipes, canning methods and crafts. You should know you're safe here!

here u go - Bee - ginger beer recipe

my grandma used to make it
Aussie favorite for a refreshing summer drink
will explode tops off bottles if filled too much

Ingredients

Serves: 20
  • For the Ginger Beer Mother:
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons ground ginger
  • For the Sugar Syrup:
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1.5 litres cold water
  • 4.5 litres warm water
  • 1/2 cup strained lemon juice
Preparation method

Prep: 4 days | Cook: 5 minutes
1.
For the ginger beer mother, place the yeast and 1/2 teaspoon of the sugar in a large jar and add the warm water and 1/2 teaspoon ginger. Mix well, cover the jar with a cloth and leave at room temperature for 8 days, mixing in 1/2 teaspoon each of sugar and ginger every day.
2.
For the sugar syrup, put the sugar and cold water in a large saucepan and heat, stirring, just until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and add the warm water and the lemon juice. Stand, if necessary, until just comfortably hand-warm.
3.
Strain the yeast mixture into the syrup, through a sieve lined with a double thickness of muslin, and stir well. Keep the sediment on the muslin for making further batches of ginger beer. Stir the syrup mixture well and pour into clean, sturdy bottles, preferably fitted with clip-on seals, or else with screwtops. Fill the bottles only to the base of the necks, and seal. Leave in a cool, safe place for about five days – in hot weather, the ginger beer will be ready in three or four days.
4.
To make further batches of ginger beer, return half the ginger beer mother left on the muslin to the jar (discard the rest) with 1 teaspoon each of ground ginger and sugar and 1 cup of water (no more yeast is added).
5.
Repeat the process as before, feeding the mother with 1/2 teaspoon each of ginger and sugar daily. After 8 days, mix with the sugar syrup and bottle as before.

Thanks, Pete! Should have known an Aussie would have a beer recipe, huh?

I'll keep it between us

But they are great for children. They put up with a lot for a 'chicken' I think they are part rabbit though.

In case you guys didn't see the FF video I made for Bee on how the two bucket system should work.. Here it is. Music is the radio. Should have waited until the next song LOL. Turn volume down. Molly baaas really loud at the start.

Aoxa, that is the biggest dang scoop I've ever seen!

No wonder you have to make so many buckets full...you have to feed all those hungry monsters with a shovel!

That doesn't happen here, does it? No one gets upset on this thread...do they? If so, they need to cool their jets. This is the drama free, no PMS thread on BYC and I hope to keep it that way. Pete's my long distance hair pretties boy toy and no one better mess with him.....or my potential Delaware chickens children!

You bad mouth him I'll cover you with poisonous wood ashes!!!!

Heard that, BDM, about the new feather duster! I will politely stand aside and wait......

until I can pop up and say, "I told ya you shouldn't have gotten that rag mop!".

They do come in handy for when my chickens run out of Charmin and to keep the nest boxes clean...just tack down a silkie, frazzle, flippy or sizzle or whatever they are and the chooks can wipe their feet before entering the nests. I better get one too....my last one's about plumb wore out.

What kills me about people getting offended is how can something like wood ash, completely natural, be harmful? They are chickens, they like to play in dirt and dust themselves. They aren't meant to be kept in a cage and kept perfectly clean and dust free. Let them be chickens.

LOL - I just need a puffball that can put up with a whole lot of kid-love! My other chooks are pretty tired of being chased down and made to watch My Little Pony reruns... or just held while the kid studies for her next test. All my research indicates that a fluffy alien would be the best choice for my daughter.

Of course personally, I'm probably going to be getting myself a few BAs and WRs this spring... and possibly a few more SFH pullets if I can find some. Love my Swedes!
