I'm pretty sure BYC has a section for recipes. There is enough wasted space on this thread!
I think that's a little rude Stony.

Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it has no value.

Good Morning Gnarly Bunch peeps...

With this season being what it is..... keeping house, getting ready for 32 people coming here in 12 days.....think I have the Haflinger sold, please keep your fingers crossed for me....

I am trying to make my way through the 178 posts since I was here last time....

THought you would get a chuckle out of how I keep up with what I have read and deal with when I get interrupted....

No problems on this thread I feel safe
yes I will continue to contribute on here ,thanks Bee,Pullet surprise& Aoxa for yer support - just got a shock -now I know how Al feels when he tries to help .

maybe I'll just stick to this & the OT's thread till I grow a thicker skin lol
Pete, I rarely ever post on other threads, but once in awhile there is someone who posts something that is a perfect opportunity (and they aren't the panic type who needs to worm their chickens & run them to the vet) to direct them over to the this & the OT threads. What they do from there is up to them. I kind of look at any rebuke I might get from others as payment for all this wonderful experience we get here. And who knows, by taking my lumps someone else's flock might benefit. You never know who might be lurking. Let the chips fall where they may. I don't do it often. Nothing is free. Honest disagreement is legitimate, trolls are not. It does make you value and appreciate Al, Walt, Bee, Fred etc. a LOT more doesn't it?! As far as a thicker skin goes.... don't let it get so thick that we have to "hang it on the shed after you've died Clyde"....I can't get that song out of my head now!!! ....Tie me kangaroo down.........tie me kangaroo down....It's gonna be with me all morning now LOL

Melabella, I saw the pic of your page numbers on the side bar before I ever got to your post in this thread, and it had me laughing! Hey, do you know that in the upper left corner there is a little thing that says how many unread posts there are - if you subscribe to the thread - how many unread ones there are for you? and if you click on it it will take you right to the first unread post!

It is a very necessary tool for me - read up til the end last night, woke up at 6 am and there were 37 more posts! geesh.

And, sold the hflinger? what is that? I thought it was a german shoe company!

Pete, I love the ginger beer recipe!

Last year I had a bumper crop of wild blackberries. After making lots of jam and jelly, I looked at the last batch and hit the web to find out what I could do with them, and came up with blackberry cordial. So, few weeks later, bottled them up all pretty, left the room, and came back to the corks all popped out and on the floor, table, etc. Checked with my 86 year old mother who was alarmed "Good God, you'll have an explosion!" She told me to cover the bottle opening with a cloth til the gases died down, and then to cork them.

Blackberry cordial, perfect for bad colds, tough days, dark nights.....

Anyway, my mom has always loved ginger beer and has been wistfully wanting some from back in the day when her neighbor made it. we're talking in the 30's here. So I am going to try your recipe out for her.

Cheers to you too!

Barred Rocks~or Plymouth Barred Rocks

Breed representation pic: As you can see, the body style represented here isn't too far off from the BA dual purpose breed~maybe a half pound difference on the wts. You will find this same body style~or slight variations thereof~in most of the dual purpose breeds. You can see that this bird has a larger, deeper, wider body than the hatchery stock bird below. She has a longer back, her tail is set a little lower and has more depth. I think, if you could see her from the top, you would see very little tapering from the front to the back. Standard wt. 7.5 lbs.

I've never seen a BR with the rose comb featured here and can find no other info on the net that shows this.

Breeder quality BR hens...notice the fine barring you see here. Distinctly different than the hatchery bird and even the pic above. This bar pattern almost hurts to look at..but shows the increased quality of the feathering and patterns of birds bred more carefully than hatchery. These youngsters look lanky and leggy but they will fill out.

Standard hatchery representation(2 views) of the breed.

I, personally, don't class the hatchery stock of the BR breed in the dual purpose category. I don't find them heavy enough nor do they have the typical body style of a dual purpose breed. I find them a little more slender and more along the lines of a leghorn or RIR in that regard. They lay large pale cream/tan eggs that are long in shape. I don't really know what the hatcheries did to them but I'm willing to bet they crossed in some layer breed genetics along the way. I find their feather quality poor. They lay very well but not for long and tend to start to burn out in the second or third year and develop reproductive problems...odd shaped eggs, thin shells, sporadic lay, etc. They can go broody but it's pretty rare if from the hatchery.

Both birds I have of this breed right now have the exact same build and quality of laying. You'll notice that tail head sets a little higher than the breeder birds or the standard pic and they also have too much taper, or narrowing at the tail. They are not as tall, as wide or as long as the breeder bird/standard bird. You can also see that the leg color is completely off from the breed standard and the breeder stock's color~what did they cross in there?

I find the breed's disposition to be friendly, sometimes a little sweet and curious, great foragers, hardy except the laying burnout issues, they molt pretty hard and can take a while to recover. Excellent laying for awhile. If I were to think about getting this bird again, it would have to be breeder stock but I doubt I will be adding them to my dream team next time.

Bee - I LOVE this breed rundown you are doing !!! Going forward would you please post the link to where you got any photos/quotes so that when I put your awesomeness up on the blog we don't run into copyright issues? As long as I give credit, it's usually fine to use these kinds of things. Bravo for another great post!!

You know - I think we all have our off moments and bad days. As hard as it can be to keep up with this thread, lets just remember the importance of being respectful and kind to one another. Hope you feel better soon, Stony.

LOL - that's what I do, too!!! I have an old paper plate with numbers (OT thread) scribbled all over it. I'm trying to get through that thread, but lately I feel like I'm losing a battle to quicksand. So much amazing information... so little extra time!

LOL - Haflingers are the most adorable ponies - generally palomino in color. They are used for driving or for mounts for children... and adults too.

Quote: Glad I made you laugh, truly one of my favorite things in life,, to make another human being laugh, or smile even. Even though my husband and I have been together for 30+ years, when I can get a huge belly laugh out of him, it is the best feeling! I love his smile....

Thank you for the info about the unread posts.. I do realize about that, but always get interrupted, and it resets and I am back to the last post. I'm a complete internet buffoon, and the numbers on the scrap paper is my speed....lol..

A Haflinger is a wonderful sturdy breed of horse. From the Austrian/Italian border, a small midsize draft really, that is like a gazelle on steep mountain slopes. Wonderful breed really, yet strong willed and can be stubborn. Easy keeper, and quite bold. Ours is named Molly. She can hual my large arrsss anywhere. They are eye candy too...
This is Molly's sire

Here is Molly

Mountainmama, Count me in on the recipe booklet. I'll pm you, yay to you and bulldogma for taking on extra projects that make us all so happy!

And Bee, I know you feel this isn't maybe the best place for talking about recipes, if I understood you right, but.....I have a little favor to ask. Would you consider asking the Bat for a real old timey recipe for just about anything? something she learned way back when? I hate it when you think you are going to see a real recipe and it turns out to be a box of this and a can of that.

I love this thread! I can't believe how much I am learning and how much it has changed my work with chickens, even though I have more than a decade of experience (call it a decade of practically ignorance).

Question: went to a different feed mill to pick up their layer mash as it had a better ingredient mix than the mill closer to me. Got in there - opened the door to a roomful of guys crowded around a battered table, who immediately shut up to see what the heck and who the heck I was.. Guy behind the counter is a little surly, I ask for a bag of their mash. He mentions it is 20% protein, and I say wow that is a little high. He asks me what I have been feeding, and I say, 16%, he says, well then you can take the sow feed, it has 16% and is just the same for chickens anyway.

So I did.
Dang, got home read the tag on this sack tied with twine, and it has the grain by products that I wanted to avoid. ANyway, I have 75 pounds to use up in FF. Anyone ever heard of using sow feed for the chickens? have to say the ingredients look about the same except for the details on what type of vitamin etc has been added.

Haflingers, oooh, I never had any interest in horses, but now, Molly looks beautiful. Makes me want one...but....hay...fencing...are...ok, I'll just admire yours!

And about stony, I read his post and laughed, I thought he was being a lttle funny. Maybe he didn't mean to sound a little surly. After all, Bee says the most outrageous things about silkies, and I don't think anyone is taking her as trying to be mean. Sometimes written words come out harsher then they would if we could hear and see the person speaking!

I think that's a little rude Stony.

the silkie part was a joke. It was no more rude than Bee calling them door mats.

As for 1/2 page picture posts being requoted over and over again....all that does is take up space....lots of space. This thread goes 10 to 20 pages a day, and 1/2 of that is the same exact pictures getting reposted over and over again
