Bee I went out to open the coops this morning & one of the 5 rescure WR hens was dead. We plan on opening her up but could you tell me what post numbers the inside of a chicken & some of the pictures showing various problems were on? Or put it up again. I was trying to read the 200+ posts just from a day ago :) but I have to get some work done so I'll finish later..... I'll check back to see if you answered ........Thanks

Bee - what kind of poultry netting do you have? I know you recommend electric poultry fencing to a lot of folks.

Side note...did you get my comment on the BA blog page? That first bird was not one of mine and I'm sorry if my post led to that confusion. That's just a pic I snagged off the net but it didn't have any copyrights stipulated..just a free stock pic.

I got the wrong kind in my efforts to have a fence that was easily moved without driving in a grounding rod at each location....gets droughty here and one has to put a rod..plus another..really deep for an electric fence. Me and the Bat are too short and don't want to fool with pounding that long ground rod in the ground every time I wanted to flip a paddock. The sheep fencing was the only one available that had the ground built into the bottom wire of the fence...self grounding.

I got the sheep fencing...which has holes too big for poultry. I got mine at Premier but I've since heard of cheaper companies so best to compare companies and pricing. The poultry appropriate fencing is about the same price, though...I paid $164 (free shipping) for 164 ft of fencing with the stakes built in, one prong...but I'd advise getting the one with two prongs on the bottom of the stakes..again, just a few dollars more.

If I had to contain a flock, I'd get it again...it has so much versatility and is so effective that I wonder why all these backyarders~ who are plagued with predators but won't make their dogs get off the couch ~don't have one. They are nice looking, portable, easy to set up, easy to move, last a long time, you can add to them with another section in a flash and they are supposed to even deter black bears.

If you go to the thread pic gallery, you can page down until you see those specific post pics and the diagram there, click on one of those pics and it will get larger...at the top of that pic it will show you the post link to where that pic was first posted. LOVE that gallery..has helped me so very much!
I've heard good things about Scovy meat. Is it really as good as they say? I really want to let my girl raise some of her own kind, and try a few for meat.

Yep...it's good. It's compact in the muscle fibers, not quite as stringy as some breeds, and flavorful...but then most duck raised at home is. Lots of dark meat, which I love...

I'm a dark meat fan as well, so that's good to hear! Never had duck at all. Never had the option.

Had my first moose roast the other night. Was delicious!!

Here is Blue is in the downstairs of his grow out coop. His blade is faded and there is a thin light line on the front side of his left wattle. He is very active though, and his legs and beak have been getting more yellow every day.

I thought ventilation was fine, but maybe I need to rethink it. This is the upstairs. There is air space on all four sides (3-4 inches wide), and the ramp is left down (10" by 40"). The ends of the upstairs are wooden doors with hardware cloth covered openings at the top of the doors. The downstairs ends are hardware cloth covered openings with glass storm windows on the 6' long sides. I have been wondering if the peat moss mixed in with the pine chips is holding too much moisture. It's so soft though.

I also need to finish the big coop and run. I'd love to free range my birds, but we have way too many dangerous animals (ie mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, not mention neighborhood cats etc) to let them out without us.

Good Morning Gnarly Bunch peeps...

With this season being what it is..... keeping house, getting ready for 32 people coming here in 12 days.....think I have the Haflinger sold, please keep your fingers crossed for me....

I am trying to make my way through the 178 posts since I was here last time....

THought you would get a chuckle out of how I keep up with what I have read and deal with when I get interrupted....
I do the same thing!!! Great minds!!

And Bee, I know you feel this isn't maybe the best place for talking about recipes, if I understood you right, but.....I have a little favor to ask. Would you consider asking the Bat for a real old timey recipe for just about anything? something she learned way back when? I hate it when you think you are going to see a real recipe and it turns out to be a box of this and a can of that.
x2. My mother, bless her heart, doesn't cook, has never wanted to cook or have anything to do with the home or garden. She knows that I love to cook/bake/garden, and she is always giving me recipes and recipe books. 9 out of 10 times, the recipes say, 'open a can' or 'use a box of ___ mix...' I always smile and say, "Thanks!" but just end up putting it in the donation pile for Salvation Army....

Man, I hate these small, triangular type coops and coop/tractors! How do you like that design? Those sharp peaks hold a lot of dead air..stale and humid. I would nix the peat moss and go with the chips if you are having humidity issues....and try to get them out of tiny spaces.

Those are some pretty gals...so much prettier than the scovies we used to keep, though I love me a scovie. They look great to me and look like they will make a full recovery. I'd let them out in the general public and cool air, though...but that's just my rough survival of the fittest side talking.
thanks Bee. They sure are pretty girls. And great egg layers. Until the attack I got 2 eggs from the 3 girls every single day. Without fail at least 2. Every once in a while all 3 would chip in an egg, I agree, they need to be in general population pretty quickly. It will however have to wait to Saturday so I'm home to watch them. Thursday and friday are 2 rare days when I won't be home all day.
