What is your biggest fear?

You're right. Flock management on purpose is my mantra...do everything with a purpose~breed selection, housing, ranging, feeding, health management. Chicken TV is fine as long as you are really watching for the subliminal message of the show.. and not just too busy laughing at the punch lines.

My biggest fear? Having no heat and no fuel for the gennie in a long-term/permanent power interruption. wood stove come to me, wood stove come to me, wood stove come to me

I am having a hard time 'just watching' the flock, anymore. My mind ticks off the things I've learned and I assimilate the information I gather as a matter of constant evaluation.
They do still crack me up, though, the silly "gooses".

You all can tell me what you already have in place and any methods you have in place that circumvents potential or actual problems with grid failure...and then I can tell you how I do it too.

All joking aside..it's a real issue out here in the country and soon could be a real issue to you folks in the city and burbs. Look at how unprepared the citizens of NY were for Hurricane Sandy...and even New Orleans. Time to look around you at the world and increase in natural disasters and weather pattern changes and realize it has increased and will only do more of the same.
We have earthquakes here in So. CA. Emergency preparedness is drilled into us from birth. We have candles, flashlights, batteries, bottles of water (2 gallon sized) in the garage, canned food, canned milk, dried beans, grills and charcoal, blankets (although it doesn't really get that cold here), backpacks for everyone in case we need to evacuate, and always keep cars at least at 1/2 tank. DH warns me when it is down to 1/4 tank. I buy 10 pounds of rice/flour, although I am now starting to think of buying in larger bulk, just not sure how to store, other than more metal trashcans in garage. The hens have a large metal trash can full of feed.

I'm Prepared! Bee, I'm going to share one of my favorite pictures with you. It's of my granddaughter - then age 3 - taking a bath in an old laundry tub. My wood stove is to the right but not in the picture. This was during the big snow, February, 2010, and six of us were snowed in for almost 2 weeks without electricity. We have a small generator but it can only keep a few lights and the computer going. I had run out of bread and you see my sourdough starter crock on the stove hearth on the right side of the picture. I actually cooked it using a slow cooker! Had to turn off the light to use the cooker but it was worth it!

We had stockpiled water before the storm and were melting snow in tubs next to the wood stove. My granddaughter was the only one who was able to get a full bath and it sure looks like she enjoyed it!

I found ginger beer at one of the local health food stores! Appreciate the recipe also!

I've seen people mentioning the picture gallery before, but I don't see it. Could be because I have the advertisements turned off?

Commercial break....getting out that old pic of the ice storm has me daydreaming through old pics and my heart was aching again for my mountain home. Wanna see a few pics? They are germane to the topic of preparing(I'll explain that one later) and I wanted to show you something of me.

Here is one from the top of the pasture, looking down on our place. I rented just the acre around the farmhouse but couldn't get the locals to rent me any of the pasture on either side. That acre had a full orchard of 15 old apple trees of various types, a coop and outhouse, cellar and cellar house, best water I ever tasted from a spring fed well and good drainage on the property.

Jon, my youngest, and Jake when he was younger too. See those little red buildings? That is my coop, dog shed and outhouse all in a row.

And my other two hulks wrestling on the front porch...

Spring...garden preparation and apple blossoms...

Spring morning and fog on the mountain...

The place I watched chicken, sheep, cow, garden, dog and cat TV when the weather was good...and it was usually good.

Sorry...didn't mean to bomb you with pics and please don't quote them or anything. Just wanted to show you where my heart had been located before I moved in with the Bat. My heart is still laying in pieces all over that land but not in a bad way....love is never a bad thing.

Pictures are Heavenly, and hold on to those, breathe deep, and see yourself there.

I would pinch myself every day I walked out the door and saw that all around.

Beautiful!

What a wonderful place to live!
I love it, there!
PS, thanks so much of sharing that with us. Made my whole day. I love the shots of the trees in different seasons.

This one is my fave. Such a lovely place. My granpa's farm was a little bit like that. It's gone now, the house burned down. Was Tucked up in a hollar in KY. Some times I forget how much I have let go over the years. Thanks for sharing and bringing that all back for a minute. It looks like the perfect place to run free.-L

Pekin number 1 bathed and ohhh boy did she enjoy it. Splashing around, having a good old time. Letting her dry some, then bringing in number 2.

Number 1 Pekin has torn flesh and what looks like road rash where her feathers and skin were tore from her. No puncture wounds at all. I managed to get 99% of the dried blood off her feathers with peroxide. She will get re Nustocked shortly. She is looking good all things considered.

glad to hear it! my hens are just barely starting to act normal after last week's owl attack.
