Yes, I will post a pic when they are looking new...they are currently lifting off and don't look pretty yet. I'm opposed to motor oil because it's motor oil...and your chicken's feet go there and feet absorb quite a bit through the skin. If I'm going to eat traces of substances absorbed into my chickens, I don't want it to come from the souped up oils they use today..particularly not used and dirty oil.

The cooking oil won't provide a deterrent, it will just make your roosts oily..could do the trick but never tried it. You could try it and let us know how it goes?

I have used veggie oil on the roosts - soaks into the wood. idea is to smother mites if there are any there. I can't really say it works, as in the 4 years since the scaly mites came with a rescue bird, I've had two outbreaks. I don't think there are any active mites now, but the legs have been so bad and never looked "renewed". As I've said, newer birds added a year ago have clean legs and no sign of infestation.

I was just looking at all the sources of sulpher on the net, and think I will order some. PIne tar, who knew it was a wood preservative?

Pine tar or Pine oil?

I have read of people white-washing the roosts with DE. I believe they used 1/2 and 1/2 then painted it on.Haven't tried it don't know how well it works--just a thought

I don't recommend DE for any surface in the coop. There are other options. You can buy a jug of Neem oil at any gardening dept. and problem is solved. It's not that expensive and it goes a long way. I've never used it but if I was looking for something for this, I might consider it. I'd also look for the sulfur...it's very cheap on Amazon.

I just received my order of Neem oil off of Amazon and you only mix 2 tab to 1 gallon of water, I squirted a drop of dish detergent in too for mixing. Sprayed my roosts down on Thurs. Have been checking my chickens daily for anymore mites.
Hey Bee have you made up your Nu stock yet?

Haven't got my sulfur yet! Will have it soon.

Y'all wanna see pics of The Bat I took today?? This is totally off topic of the thread but it will give you an idea of from whence I come......

She is dressed up here for a re-enactment at a local historic site that does fall tours of the Blennerhassett Island and mansion here locally~she is one of the servants in the show and does clogging around a bonfire. Jake does no clogging whatsoever...he's more of a butt-sniffin' dog. Dancin' is fer sissies.

Dang, even with her smile she looks fierce! (in my book, that is a very good thing).

Ok, I am heading into town to look for the sulpher to spray the roosts. Spent an hour scooping up leaves in the woods, and think I will hold them in reserve for when the first bad day hits - give the girls a bit of a change from the hay. With the drought, I am having a heck of a time finding any good alfalfa hay, I usually like to have a bale to give them something more to pick through in the winter.

Have a medium sized crock on the back of the stove with mash, water, and braggs, hope it starts soon to ferment.

You are right, the neem isn't so expensive - I guess I was remembering the tiny bottles at the natural foods co-op.
