Jake is 6 yrs old.  He's a remarkable animal and smart as a tack.  I've never regretted ever taking him on...he was free and earns his keep every single day.  Can't beat that with a stick!  He also does every thing I say~trained him in about 20 min. when he was 2 mo. old and he has retained that training and has compounded it with many different things.  He's the second most responsive dog I've owned and I don't think there are too many things he can't learn.

To me, he's excellent and I love him!  The chickens, sheep and cats love him.  Even the Bat has grown to love him.  He may not be everyone's idea of a LGD but he gets the job done and that's all that matters.

:thumbsup

Cute too. ;)

Can't complain about a dog that pretty much trains itself!

When I was a teenager, we lived way up in the hills where we could see the northern lights throughout the winter, would be snowed in for days at a time and then a pay loader would have to dig us out. We could see neighbors in the distance but not close. We always had a German Shepherd named Duke. He sounds like Jake. Never remember him chasing cows, pigs, chickens, cats; but he did keep everything away. I remember Mom and Dad pulling quills out more than once and a couple of times had to be taken to the vet for the ones down his throat. He was very protective of us kids. Today, I have 3 nucklehead dogs that I know would kill my chickens. 2 herding dogs and a spaniel. Not really chicken protection animals. I've had them for years 11, 9, 3 but have only had chickens for 2. (This time, I had chickens years ago. Bee, I can understand what you are saying. Our Duke was an excellent farm dog and I'm sure there are more. I do believe they are the exception, not the rule. Plus, you have all of us that claim to know how to train a dog but HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE!!! ( Please, I'm only speaking about myself). Give Jake a pat for me. This has brought back eye tearing memories of when my Dad was still alive. Thanks.

I'd give him a pat but he's been rolling in a greasy deer hide....

His is slick with deer fat and rotten goo!

Duke sounds like a typical great farm dog and was the LGD of the past and that was always good enough for us back then, wasn't it? I guess farm dogs are just out of fashion....or folks are keeping their farm dogs inside all the time and ruining their instincts to guard the farm yard territory.

I've been blessed by having 3 most wonderful farm dogs that were the most reliable and efficient guardian dogs I've ever seen. I wouldn't have traded not a one of them for any certified LGD. I've had the living livestock to prove it!

Can I use layer pellets that contain meat by-products in my fermented feed? I posted this on the FF thread but haven't got an answer yet.

I don't see why not...most of the folks out there who are avoiding the soy protein based feeds are using the animal proteins in their FF and I haven't heard anything negative about that yet. Try it and report to us?

I have fish meal in everything I ferment. And I really do need to ferment less types of food, but I need to use up what I have first. The chick starter seems to ferment the least well. I think it's because it has fewer whole grains. The grower does pretty well, but the layer goes crazy. All of it is the same brand, type, etc. I figure I will end up with grower or layer at some point and just not brood anymore chicks and if it's grower just have oyster shell available, which will make everything so much better.

There's nothing wrong with feeding grower to chicks if it is fermented.

My starter ferments really well. Probably the best out of the grower, turkey grower and starter.
