Jake is 6 yrs old. He's a remarkable animal and smart as a tack. I've never regretted ever taking him on...he was free and earns his keep every single day. Can't beat that with a stick! He also does every thing I say~trained him in about 20 min. when he was 2 mo. old and he has retained that training and has compounded it with many different things. He's the second most responsive dog I've owned and I don't think there are too many things he can't learn.

To me, he's excellent and I love him! The chickens, sheep and cats love him. Even the Bat has grown to love him. He may not be everyone's idea of a LGD but he gets the job done and that's all that matters.

Do we have a picture of Jake? I'd love to see him so I can imagine him in my mind when I read about him?

I never, ever figured Jake wasn't good. I only started it all by saying that if a dog does not keep other dogs off the property, it's not a Livestock Guardian Dog! I had no idea that Jake didn't stack up in this way LOL. But as you said, it's all opinion. That was mine. And this is yours. Works for me!!

There's nothing wrong with feeding grower to chicks if it is fermented.
My starter ferments really well. Probably the best out of the grower, turkey grower and starter.

I bought the starter before I was fermenting. *just before*. Argh. So, I am stuck with a ton of it. I really don't like how it ferments, but maybe that is because I am doing small portions. If I get more than two chicks out of the batch in the incubator, I'll be able to ferment more. Right now, with just two chicks, I don't have to ferment a lot. If it gets too strong, I just give it to the other chickens.

Any food. Any food. Not only that, but any chicken food can be fermented. I won't feed a "vegetarian" diet and it never did matter. Works fine.

I have even put bacon fat in it just before I know I am going to start fresh. I even tossed in a partial old bag of cat food once. The dogs love that as much as the birds did.

My layer pellets contain as their first ingrediant 'animal protien" and I ferment it and have nothing but wonderful things to say about the results.
I don't know if meat-by products is the same as animal protein...

Where do you buy layer pellets with animal protein? I have never seen either grower pellets or layer pellets that contain animal protein here in NH.

I found pellets or crumbles with animal protein last year at Southern States Co-op which is a national chain farm store, but now I get it from local country feed dealers, usually guys who run small outfits. If you ask around to farm people in your area that have horses, cattle, goats, etc. they can probably tell you. I read all of the labels that come on the bags. I think the last brand I tried is called Blue Star 16% layer .

If you include fish meal as animal protein, I have been buying Magill Farms organic poultry feed and it has fishmeal. I get mine from Azure Standard. I am trying to avoid corn and soy, though I do still have a small bit of the organic corn in mine from the layer I had before this. Just dumped all the bags together. LOL And I keep finding popped corn in the feed. The girls love it, even fermented and soggy.

What is the bag/vest Clem is wearing? Is it part of her training so she knows she is *working*?
