Where do you buy layer pellets with animal protein? I have never seen either grower pellets or layer pellets that contain animal protein here in NH.
I never even thought about it, it's what our local feed store carries...Winner Feeds...milled by J.P. Green Co in Mocksville, NC...Do I need to start bootlegging it up north to you?

Seriously, I had no idea! Our feed store carries their starter crumbles and layer pellets, that's the only 2 forms I've seen it in.

Do we have a picture of Jake? I'd love to see him so I can imagine him in my mind when I read about him?

Yeah...but he ain't real pretty. He hasn't been pretty since he was a pup but we don't tell him that. We just tell him he's the best dog in the world but we leave out the "since Jimmy and Lucy died" part. He doesn't know anything different....

Few pics of the Jake, AKA Chocolate Thunda:

Thing One and Thing Two....that's him on the right with my good ol' Lucy Lou, the REAL LGD, per standards of fighting off any dogs that come near the flocks. Jake is just a second hand man and grabs the offending dog's behind and works his way to Lucy until they meet in the middle. Lot's of screamin' and fur aflyin' but these two have never lost a fight.

He ain't purdy but he shore is smart!

And last, but not least...as an accessory to a lady's outfit, the Bat and Jake. When you are dressing like an old hillbilly, ya gotta have an old brown cur dog to complete the ensemble.
I never, ever figured Jake wasn't good. I only started it all by saying that if a dog does not keep other dogs off the property, it's not a Livestock Guardian Dog! I had no idea that Jake didn't stack up in this way LOL. But as you said, it's all opinion. That was mine. And this is yours. Works for me!!

Yeah, Galanie, Jake has that one flaw...he loves him someone to play with, be it a stray dog or a sheep. He isn't real picky. He doesn't stack up to being a full on LGD but he doesn't know that so try to keep it on the low low.

If he finds it out he may just give up and become a house dog.

I want wood ash so bad! I can't believe I have no family in this area with a fireplace. I don't get my Chiminea till summer...

Honey, put an ad in the free locals and someone will oblige ya, I'm sure. Everyone who lives in the burbs and heats with wood is probably having a hard time finding a place to put ashes, so I bet you could do a deal with someone to collect from them every now and again.

That's how I find all the things I want but when I don't know anyone in the area...I start talking. I talk to people I work with, go to church with, buy feed from, etc. You'd be surprised at how many free and wonderful things you can get just by letting folks know you are looking for them.

Most folks have stuff lying around they just want to get rid of and wouldn't think that anyone could possibly want or need it....then along comes a scrounger like me and opens my mouth and you can see a light come on in their face as they remember grandma's old canning stuff stacked in their garage, that old chain link fencing they would like taken down and hauled away, the wheat grinder and 480# of red turkey wheat sealed up in nifty red tins that they will never use but need to get out of their basement. FREE is good and one person's junk is another person's treasure.....

I absolutely adore this picture! He is beautiful! I love big gangly animals of any kind. What a wonderful face. What were his parents? GS and some lab or dobe?

Hi all - Finally got a new blog post up!

Check it out HERE!

Excellent and well written! I already posted a comment and I encourage anyone else who likes it to do the same so that Leigh can get her numbers up and get more sponsors. In the midst of all this stuff, she still finds time to help others by building this site. Thank you, BDM!!!

A question on Neem Oil for greasing up the roosts. Does it make it slippery? If so, why couldn't you dust the posts with wood ash after. Because of the mites, I've dusted the girls a couple of times now and most recently, dug out 3 x 3 x 6 in area under the tarped area for them to dust all winter. Our area is known for the rocks we grow. After I picked the rocks out, I mixed the remainder of the dirt with wood ash and they have a nice dirt/dust pit.
I like the picture of Jake with the squirrel. It looks like those toys you can buy that has the stuffing all taken out.
