How awful!! THank goodness you are ok! So Sorry! I hope your family was all safe. The house I grew up in burned to the ground. It was devastating, but survivable since we all were able to get out to safety, especially my little sister who was in all places, the shower when it ignited up the wall!

I hope your chickens will be well. Nu Stock is advertised for minor burns, so I am sure as long as there is no open sloughing of the skin, it will be fine.

Help please, we had a fire and lost our coops but have a few survivors that have swollen waddles from the heat.  Would nu-stock help in this situation?  Is there any kind of readily available pain medicine that I should use.  I can't really tell how much pain a couple are in or if they are just still "shell shocked".  The fire was in the middle of the night (Sunday into Monday).  Thanks for any advice you have.

I am so sorry. I have no advice as I remember not long ago calling our vet when our house was still on fire, asking what I could do for my cats and dogs. You have my sympathies. I wish that I could help. Hopefully someone can on here. I'm shedding tears with you. (Not sure just how much wiping a chicken can do, but the smoke is greasy. Wipe it off if you can. We used baby wipes and pet wipes. We put saline solution in their eyes). Sue

Thanks, well the good side to this is we can rebuild and the fire didn't spead to the house or barn so it certainly could have been much much worse. I'll use some saline solution this afternoon on their eyes.

on the tube of Nu- stock i have it doesn't say anything about using on burns but it does say for all skin disorders and deep wounds and cuts. it maybe very soothing to them,

Oh my goodness - I'm so sorry to hear about this!

They may benefit from a humidifier to soothe their airways, if its possible to set up one for them.
As for the Nu Stock... can't hurt, might help! I would try it.

Sweety, the Storey's book is the root of all chicken evil...it would only compound those chicken's misery. Toss it quickly if you have it in your home before it taints your husbandry methods.

GREAT Bee.... I have read that book inside and out forward and backwards a dozen times. no wonder my girls are in bad shape... (just kidding) seriously though, what's the bad part of the book? I tossed it off my office shelf just a second ago just for you, but how come I did it?

It is USDA approved book on raising chickens....in other words, nothing to do with actually how one is to raise livestock in any way, shape, or form. The lady who wrote it has only had chickens for a few years and she doesn't even do the hands on care for them....one of the OTs~a very trustworthy and honest fellow~is her neighbor and knows exactly how much she knows on chicken husbandry. Pretty much zip. No self respecting OT would ever recommend following the book's advice on raising chickens, in other words.

I picked it up one day at the library, read a few paragraphs, snorted and placed it back on the shelf. That's all the longer it took for me to discover that the author had never really successfully raised chickens for any length of time.

That swelling will go down and I wouldn't put anything on it unless they blister, then some bag balm or NS will protect those areas from germs. I wouldn't use any pain meds...chickens are very resilient and are much tougher than you think. Just keep them quiet and let nature happen, then watch for any that are more deeply affected by the fire and may need possible culling. It sounds like they aren't too bad but we can't know if they have inhaled smoke or had lung tissue affected by the heat and are filling up with fluid there.

Just fresh water with ACV(they will need the electrolyte replacement), good and soft foods(FF would be excellent for this) and rest. That's all.

It sounds like you got them out in time. Could you share with us what started the fire so that maybe others could avoid this happening?
