What are your girls' crests like? I know mine can barely see. Poor things. I like that about them, but need to trim for safety.
Okay because you asked

Mine have big round poufs !!! Don't see well at all ....... My miracle Lavender silkie Spook

BUT ...... Post Rain??? The whites are a MESS as is the lavender above.... but guess what a messy dirty pouf gives them much better vision...

I trimmed my partridge silkie because her poof was HUGE! I loved it. Of course she had to die :(

They are documented to lay better than an australorp (who is average) Chantecler are classified as average to above average.

I'd love to have some, because I'm all into preserving rare breeds. And a Canadian rare breed? Count me in. I have a friend that raises them, I'll be trading her chicks for chicks sometime next year.

I have two chanteclers hens that lay med/small eggs and go broody too often...they are on my cull list...

wow
I take wheat seeds, wet them, place them in a zip lock bag and hang it on my kitchen curtains No fuss no muss.
Do you ever rinse them or just leave them??? Do you grow them into grass or just sprout?? I've had terrible time with them going moldy on me .... but I think it is my climate :)

lol..
I am really sorry..those are so not chickens.
I could never have them because I could never eat them.
I would NEVER eat these guys!!! They are eye candy and they make me smile every day... so they more then earn their keep!

I was not supporting or endorsing any opinions just trying to be a peacemaker

and I want to point out that ones state of mind when reading a post influences the way they interpret it... so if you are predisposed to think that every time someone quotes a study they are questioning your methods ... well then that is how you will read all those posts..... FYI I didn't even read anything that was quoted in that post as I currently have no chicks or need for chicks...

I only think that when someone actually questions my methods...and THEN quotes numerous studies(see below).

I never mind when folks question the things I do or say on here...such is the way we communicate our reasons. Aoxa was just trying to find out information, was concerned that I had not read certain studies because my communication was poor and I explained that I had read all the studies but didn't pay them any mind.

No peace to make. Just a misunderstanding that we worked out pretty quickly.

Frankly, I've always made it quite clear that all the information I give on my threads are on a take or leave it basis, so I don't really feel the need to argue my point of view at all, but I will clarify my reasons for doing something. If someone doesn't like the reasoning, they are always free to discard it forthwith. I have no agenda here at all. I simply do not care one iota if people believe me or do the things I suggest. If they ask, I answer...otherwise I just describe what I do and how it works. Offering it up for thought...but never for argument. I don't like to argue at all..but I will defend my right to do or believe the way I wish and I won't shove it down anyone's throat as being the right way for them. Just for me.

See? Not a bit predisposed every time to taking offense when people quote studies at me...I simply don't wish to see them unless I ask for them. I have Google and a curious mind, so I'm quite capable of finding the things I want to know and applying them.

Aoxa is my friend and I like it that she was concerned for me. We haven't had any strife on this thread and I really, really would like it to continue being an easy, breezy thread without all the false drama that flies on the other threads. I'm fine, Aoxa is fine, and I hope you are fine with us being fine.

Quote: Why do you think so many say such a thing though? Even people doing this for years advise against it. Even the folks in our community who have been raising birds for over 50 years have them on grower. Do you feed layer because of it's availability? Because of price?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm curious.. I started feeding layer to chicks when I first started, and they all slowly faded away. IT was terrible.

So after doing a bit of research... Thinking that since my birds don't rely solely on their feed for 100% of their diet, they should be able to find what they need to balance the calcium properly.

But is layer REALLY necessary? The only difference in values is the calcium when compared to my grower feed. Wouldn't they get adequate calcium from forage, and scraps?
