Around here, the big chain pharmacies don't carry Flowers of Sulfur any more because they've all gone "big business" and they don't carry it if they can't sell it all out in a week. So I got some in the gardening section. Gotta be sure to get the "dusting sulfur" or "wettable sulfur" though cause the soil type is granular. (I didn't get it for mites though, I got it for another reason.)
Note about my "big business" comment: Back when I was young, in the Stone Ages, stores carried what customers wanted, even if they didn't sell but one box a year (assuming it was something that would keep for a good while). I sure do miss that way of merchandising. It made for a lot of stuff not being Factory Fresh but when it's something like sulfur, so what?
Me too its been awhile since I used sulfur. I used the stuff in Wood Duck boxes for twenty years. I never saw a mite one in the houses are on the birds. I'm gonna get some & use it. I never put a lot just poured some in the corners of the houses & added shavings. I cleaned all the houses out once a year & added sulfur & new shavings. Someone mentioned it wasn't a good idea. I beg to differ I did this forever with not a problem. If it worked then it will work now.

That was me, I read it wasn't a good idea to let the animals come in contact with the powder that it needed to be washed into the ground first, I wanted to use it in my coop to spray on the roosts. But wasn't sure if it was a good idea after reading that.

I'm not gonna argue. Again, every year for twenty years I cleaned out the woodies house sprinkled some in the corners & added shavings. I use to pick the birds up to band them. Never saw a mite one on the bird or in the houses. My father taught me the trick. He was a audubon guy. He helped with the whooping crains down around Port Aransas. I think it was called Aransas wildlife refuge. They helped the whooping cranes from dang near extinction. I trusted his judgement on dang near anything when it came to wildlife. My father understood the reasoning & how to help. I never questioned him. Its your call.

Well I wanted to be sure it was safe before getting it. I wasn't trying to argue, just been trying to figure out the best way to get rid of the mites, their gone for now but don't want to use Premise spray again, I trust your judgement and would never want to argue about something I am just learning about. Just needing help to figure out whats best to use.

Galanie, I'm sure your aware of this but you have one of the finest hardware stores I've ever been in. If you need something totally off the wall they have it. It's called Bering Hardware there high but those folks have everything & have been in business forever. I have some hunting licenses that my grandfather purchased from berings back in the twenty's. There signed August Bering.

I hear you I'm not real good at writing so take my words with a grain of salt. I think you would be safe using the stuff in your boxes with no ill effects. You don't need much just put it in the corners not a glukk just a spigeon LOL.

Know what I like about a thread like this? I can take little bits of what I want to use, and leave what I'd rather not mess with. I prefer natural, and that's what I get here. Do I agree with everything? No. But, that's the great thing about BYC, lots to read and learn and make my own decisions about.
I need wood ash...this is my most recent decision.

Drilling hole in the bottom of the metal- dish- outside fire- mini-pit thingy that our son gave us years ago (with screen lid), that has hardly ever been used and water collects in so always left it tilted over....now have a reason to use it. There's so much wood around here to be burned!!! Should have a great stock of ashes soon enough.

OK!! Let me know where you get it if you will. I'm gonna use it again but this time for chickens. I sure miss the woodies. I didn't shoot very many of them but I do have a pair mounted. The drake has my band on it. I shot one every year for my fathers friend who was a fly fisherman. he tied his flies from the feathers. Other than that I just shot pictures of them. Amazing bird they can fly through the woods at alarming speeds. They have thirty two different colored feathers. Very cleaver bird. They were called summer ducks way back when. The reason they almost went extinct was because of humans. They hunted them at the wrong time of the year & dang near wiped them off the planet. There back & the limit is two a day.
