It would be hard on the skin. In a nest box, where it would settle down under the top layer of nesting stuff, sounds pretty good though. Then again, might be a reason we don't use it today. Mine dust in wood ashes all the time and unless it's been a long while since I've been able to supply them with any, they just don't get mites.

Where did mine come from then? lol I just was on Amazon and finally ordered Neem Oil and will use it on the roosts to make sure the buggers don't come back as requested by Beekissed blog. I just didn't realize there was so many different ways to buy Neem, wow but I got the true Neem oil and will mix it with a tiny bit of soap to make sure it sprays good. Thanks for all the info.
Haha I don't know where yours came from. All I know is that last winter we had a long wet spell when I couldn't burn anything and all the ashes washed away. In about 6 weeks, they were getting a few mites. Waiting a few days till the wood dried out some, and lit the fire. Next day, they had ashes to dust in and I haven't seen any on them since. Never had to powder them or anything.

OK!! Let me know where you get it if you will. I'm gonna use it again but this time for chickens. I sure miss the woodies. I didn't shoot very many of them but I do have a pair mounted. The drake has my band on it. I shot one every year for my fathers friend who was a fly fisherman. he tied his flies from the feathers. Other than that I just shot pictures of them. Amazing bird they can fly through the woods at alarming speeds. They have thirty two different colored feathers. Very cleaver bird. They were called summer ducks way back when. The reason they almost went extinct was because of humans. They hunted them at the wrong time of the year & dang near wiped them off the planet. There back & the limit is two a day.
I'm looking on line now but I think most big box stores have it too. I'll let ya know,. Gorgeous ducks, we live above a mt, river and every once in a while wood ducks will come through here. There are nesting boxes set up all along the river for them since they were here at one time. Sure would like to see them more often.
This looks like a good place to order I am still looking though. http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com/ProductCart/pc/-c448.htm

Well went to the other feed store today and.....Bag Balm was on sale & they had one tube of Nu-Stock left

So I picked both up...........but I hope they just turn out to be dust collectors on the shelf but if I need them I am prepared. Think I might even use the nus tock on the dogs itchy spots after reading the label.

And I have decided my hens are goofy............since I heat my house with wood stove decided to put all those ashes to good use. Left a pan out the other day & the hens were fighting to get in there lol Today they were eating it........so I put more in their covered run in their favorite dust bath areas & I swear they pushed me out the way in order to get their first...........when I went back later you couldn't even tell I had ashes in there. Thank goodness I have an endless supply lol

My biggest hen trying to get into the wood ashes before the other two do :)

That was me, I read it wasn't a good idea to let the animals come in contact with the powder that it needed to be washed into the ground first, I wanted to use it in my coop to spray on the roosts. But wasn't sure if it was a good idea after reading that.

I wouldn't worry bout it too much...in my old feed store they sold the sulfur dust as a dusting powder for chickens. The NuStock is almost entirely sulfur and it does the chickens good...and my dog has licked both applications of NS off himself. He's lookin' shiny and healthy out there in the sun. Seems like it's even good when ingested...

I can tell you this much...one minute he was itching holes in himself and the next he was good and hasn't itched since. Either the external application of NS or the internal application sure kicked those fleas in the butt.

Mineral oil? Your local Dollar General has it.

Mixed the FF in with layer mash about 50/50 this morning. Wanted to break them into it easy. NO NEED! They wolfed it down and have trolled behind me all day begging for more. Hubby then went into the woods and gathered a wheelbarrow of fallen leaves, threw those in the run and they've had a wonderful time scratching all day. Ashes from last night's fire are in the metal bucket but I'm going to wait until tomorrow to put them in their dusting spot.

If there's going to be any "smoldering chickens", I want to make sure it's intentional and not accidental.

The girls will sleep tight tonight.

Our house only has gas fireplaces. Last night I told DH, "Hon, we need to have a big bonfire soon for the chickens!"

He looked at me like I'd lost the few marbles I have left...

Beekissed I am still reading through this thread and haven't gotten to the pine tar and mineral oil yet, what are we using these 2 for please?

Long about the middle you will find that we've opted to make our own NuStock and someone posted the proportions of the ingredients and so we are going to do it. No sense paying out all that money and worrying about where to get the stuff when you can make your own.

That's pretty much how I've always gotten by in life....find something I like and learn how to make it for myself instead of paying the high price for the same thing. It pays off down the line....
