The rooster needs to go!

Sorry to hear he's becoming aggressive. But he must go when they become this way. I have an EE rooster who so far is a sweetheart and he has become one of my favorites but I'm really afraid he will become nasty. From what I've been reading it seems a lot of EE roosters turn. Hope mine stays sweet.

Don't change your mind about him. Mean roos belong in a pot. There are far too many nice ones out there needing homes to bother with a mean one.

You are absolutely doing the right thing! He'll taste wonderful. As others have said, "Life is too short to deal with a mean rooster" Your son's safety needs to be your primary concern. As far as "doing something" to make them turn mean? No. Sometimes it just happens. If they all came from the same rooster, it could be genetic.

Thank you to your husband for his duty, and to you for supporting him in doing so.

I dunno- 3 of the 4 Roos from that hatch turned mean. I never fussed over them (beyond being a treat-machine for the whole flock) or tried to make cuddly pets out of them, but I'm beginning to think that I had to have done *something* wrong for them to all go mean like that.

Don't go blaming yourself! If you feel like you've done it wrong the first time around , its a simple fix, next time you get a new set of chicks do things different spend alot of time with the roos, holding them and cuddling them alot from day one, I did and I haven't had a mean roo yet, however I never had an EE roo either mine are really docile breeds Orpington Roo, Salmon Fav. Roo and Silkie Roos.

Oh wait I LIED Sorry, I did have a Mean Roo, surprisingly it was a red Silkie Roo, nothing I did made a difference to him, I didn't give the attention to him like I did with the others when he was little, but he wasn't mean til he got to be top Roo in the silkie pen, and when I did try to straighten him out it was a lost cause! I tried every method I found on the subject but nothing helped, I think he was just mean spirited even so I didn't have the heart to kill him myself so I took him to the zoo where they had no problem putting him down as feed for the zoo animals. Your doing the right thing by protecting your son and other potential victims from him. Oh and My seabright roo, was a little aggressive too but I used the handling treatment with him and he is fine now so I guess it all has to do with an individual Roo, some just can't be changed and some can, /BUT you can't take a chance on your young son getting hurt.
Best of Luck, Sandy

mean rooster stew is pretty popular in this crowd. As a mom the kids come first, no one can hold that against you. I hope your next rooster is a gentleman.
