my chicks have been in their outdoor coop&run for a week now and at the moment our run has a roof and predator proof, dirt on the ground but I am wondering if there is something else I should be putting in their run.

thanks :)

Any pics? You can start deep litter by adding dry leaves, dry grass clippings (as long as there's no pesticides), yard waste, straw or other biomass you might have. It will keep the run clean, dry and smelling good and give nutrition and entertainment for your chickens when the bugs move in. Later you can harvest rich compost for your garden.

Also, welcome to BYC! Glad to have you here!

Ours JUST got put in their run on SUnday! (so excited they are out of the garage!) They have a dirt run as well, but I am also building it up for as a deep litter. I heard it should help keep the smell down, and gives them more stuff to scratch & peck at. So far I just have been sprinkling a bit of hay every day to cover the poops, and tossed in some kitchen scraps (chopped up a bit).

You're going to love how easy and sweet smelling DLM can be! I'm a little over 1 year into it and poop just disappears, my run is 90% compost with some hay scattered on top when needed and my chickens love it!

That is awesome! We live in a multi-gerational house so anything to keep our extended family happy (the eggs in the next month or so should help too!)
