The sand in my run got wet, and now it stinks!

Let us know how it goes- I'm betting you'll be very pleased with the results.

80 s.f. per bird is more than I've ever heard anyone suggest. It is not needed based on my experience. Most say 4 s.f. in the coop and 10 s.f / bird for a run. You won't be able to maintain grass with this size, but that is a luxury most can't afford if you want them to be in a secure coop and run. I have almost exactly 80 s.f. of run for my 8 birds and it seems just right, but I do let mine out for 1/2 hour in the morning and 1/2 - 1 hour at night for some exercise.

I have sand in my covered run and sprinkle with stall dry on occasion. I also pick up those nice big morning poops with a pooper scooper almost every day. I say don't give up on your current sand and keep experimenting, try to create an eave or way to keep wind blown rain out and consider adding another 10 s.f to the run.

Good luck,
Colleen
