Thanks everyone, all of yours are good! I found it was easiest to get all the colors, shading, and blending just right by using pastels. I did the horse solid bay in pastel and then went through and put all the markings, patches, spots, eyes, mane, and tail in acrylic paint.

I do the same, most of the time. I do the color in acrylics, but the details in pastel.

Ah, so you do the same thing just in reverse. How many coats of matte finish do you find you need before the model stops scratching so easily? I find the lightest touch takes some of the pastel off. I did three coats yesterday and I might do more today.

It took me about 20 coats, and several layers of pastel to get it right.

I probably did around fifty coats of pastel, so I'll do something like twenty coats of matte finish and hope that does the trick, I already have my next three projects planned. A blue roan overo stud, a chestnut appaloosa mare, and a medicine hat dun native American pony
