So I have been reading some threads of people that have started a thread about their chickens and update it everyday or so and share their stories about their chickens. And I thought to myself, why don’t I do that? So, here it is!

During the COVID lockdown my dad said that as a doomsday preparation we were going to get chickens so we could have an unlimited supply of eggs. So we bought 4 langshan bantams from a local breeder, built our own chicken coop and well embarked upon the wonderful journey of chicken hood. Now we have 10 chickens, I will post their profiles soon!

LOVE THESE!

Meg

Breed: Langshan Bantam
Age: Approximately 1 year
Gender: Female
Colour: Black
Eggs per week: 2-4

Pecking order rank: #1
Friendships: Her best friend is Hay-Hay, but she gets on well with Cauliflower too.
Favourite food: Some strange vine leaves that grow in our backyard
Favourite saying: Brrr brrr brrkk
Personality: Meg is one of my original 4. She’s a little skiddish when you try to pick her up when she doesn’t want to, but most of the time she will crouch down and allow you to hold you for a while. Meg went broody about 2 months ago with her best friend Hay-Hay and it took forever to break them because I’m a newby! 194E80AE-0C5C-4FF9-A2BC-08D86F723ED5.jpeg

Hay-Hay

Breed: Langshan Bantam
Age: Approximately 1 year
Gender: Female
Colour: Black
Eggs per week: 2-4

Pecking order rank: #2
Friendships: Her best friend is Meg, but she gets on well with Cauliflower too.
Favourite food: Some strange vine leaves that grow in our backyard
Favourite saying: Brrr brrr
Personality: Hay-Hay is one of my original 4. Hay-Hay is the smallest of all the hens but she stands up for herself well and makes sure she gets what she wants! Hay-Hay and Meg went broody about 2 months ago, but their eggs were not fertile because we have no rooster, so we had to break them.

Cauliflower

Breed: Langshan Bantam
Age: Approximately 1 year
Gender: Female
Colour: White with some grey feathers
Eggs per week: 2-3. I don’t think she gets enough calcium because her eggs always look a little strange.

Pecking order rank: #3
Friendships: Cauliflower has always been a little lonely since her sister and bestie Asparagus died, but she gets along with Meg and Hay-Hay just fine
Favourite food: This is a little tricky because she is very cautious when she eats and is always the last one to get to the food and water, so I don’t really know what her favourite food is.
Favourite saying: Iarrr iarrhh
Personality: Cauliflower is one of my original 4. She is very shy and often spends the whole day chilling in her favourite spot (in a pot plant) with a few passing bys from Meg and Hay-Hay.

Asparagus

Asparagus was the 4th one of the Langshan sisters. She was grey and her and Cauliflower were best friends. We had only had them for about a month when my dog decided she wanted the spotlight again and attacked Asparagus while I was putting them away one afternoon. The dog either broke her neck or she died of shock, either way I hope it wasn’t too painful. My dog got the silent treatment for a week, but it was very traumatic for me and my sisters. But the worst thing was that she had layed her very first egg that day.

Lily jr - LJ

Favourite saying: Burrrr brrrrr barrr
Personality: LJ is quite cuddly and enjoys being picked up and stroked. She is probably one of my best layers.

She is also my most photogenic chicken and loves posing for photos, so if anyone needs a chicken model I’ve got you covered!
