In the Brooder
I have a 2 year old silkie hen named Ellie. She's the best mother ever. She is on her 4th brood. So about 4 weeks ago. I threw about 30 pounds of grass in to the run for compost. My silkies stay in a separate coop then my larger birds but still go in the same run. I was watching the chickens one day and saw Ellie picking up the dead grass. I was confused. She then carried it to her favorite corner. She did this for about a week. I thought. Eh normal behavior. She didn't come out for weeks. She was in this grass pile for weeks and I thought just broody didn't care if she had eggs. Yesterday I saw this.
Aww chicks. I went into the coop and almost fainted.
She puts fresh bedding in it daily and throws the dead stuff in a pile. The bird I thought was only instinct but I can see that she crafted it it with small twigs were twisted in the dead grass and small rocks lined the nest.
