Yes, this is true, but there are some woods that they prefer to grow on. Some wood substrates can work, but not as well as preferred woods. There are some woods that they don’t like growing on at all. Pine is a good example, I believe.
I do amateur mushroom growing in case you haven’t noticed. Right now I have shiitake and blue oyster growing on a fruiting block in a fruiting bin.
