The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

Hey guys this is one of my Silver Laced Wyandotte Hens - shes 1.5 years old. Done quite well at shows to date.

But really need to know if there are any tricks at getting her snow white like some of her other show competition. There are clearly some tricks I do not yet know. I'm new to showing poultry.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

One thing I have been told is to avoid yellow feed items like corn. There is probably a diet for keeping them white on the internet somewhere. I hope that helps.

yes they are only fed layers pellets and rolled barley with some supplements and oils. But these birds are also washed for shows - any washing tips for white birds?

There is a purple shampoo or bluing agent especially designed to enhance white animals. It's usually sold in horse products. It must be used diluted and it does stain your skin if you don't wear gloves. Here is a link explaining the preparation for showing. :)

If you find the shampoo is not working or that the color is "in" the feather, I would still consider the diet. Layer pellets have corn in them and from what I've heard still color the feathers yellow. I saw a show diet for White Wyandotte in an old book. If I run across it I will post it here.

Thanks that would be SUPER helpful :)
I found this from Cjarvis a BYC member on another thread. Another one of the posters said they use cracked white corn instead of yellow to keep the white sharp.

Cjarvis:
I have a feed supplier that runs a custom mix for me, however you can achieve a very similar result with common items from the hog and horse sections of the feed stores.
Wheat gem Oil as a top dress-Takes a few weeks to get through to the feather but also adds a nice layer of heavy fat to the body.
Cod Liver Oil as a top dress
Fat supplements such as Fat and Fluffy or Sumo mixed into the feed

Black oil sunflower seeds in diet
Floating Fish food in diet
High fat dog food in Diet
Show Hog rations with Fat content not less than 5%

Redcell a liquid vitamin supplement often used as a top dress
B12 liquid in water to keep them active and lively in the coop

My mix consists of twice cracked popcorn, oats, wheat, barley, black oil sunflower seed, fish meal, floating fish food, calf manna, 22% protein 7.5% fat hog pellet, 10 gallons molasses, 10 gallons wheat germ oil, 10 gallons soy oil. That is for 1000lb
