The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

My heritage girls don't start laying until 9 months at a minimum. Ive had some wait a year due to winter delaying them. She looks ready, but try to be patient. I know how hard that can be.

From what I've learned there are some factors:

1) enough space to run
2) quiet, no sudden noises
3) patience

It's the #3 that gets me all the time. Our SLW was 24 weeks old when she laid her first on 9/3 and then the 2nd one today (9/5). Second egg was fatter than the first one. Just be patient. Has she begun to squat when you come near yet? If she has figure about 7 - 10 days from the first squat is the norm. Mine was on the 8th day from the first squat. Just be patient, she will lay.

my silver laced wyandottes are 23 wks old, have bright red combs and are heathy but still havn't laid an egg. Does anyone know why their taking so long?

Good stock usually takes longer than hatchery stock since they are breed for other factors not just production.
My guys lay more the more (healthy) treats they get--even soaking their crumbles or pellets in water gets they excited when I don't have many left overs for them!

Well, my girls will be 25 weeks tomorrow and I'm still waiting on eggs...they're hatchery birds, so I had really expected them to lay by now. They look ready (well, two of them do)...bright red combs, plumping up...I don't know what they're waiting for. I go out there every day expecting to see my first egg, and nothing!! It's driving me nuts. What do you think? Do they look ready? Here's pics I took today:

This is Astrid, her comb is smaller, but super red:

And Lexi, who I really expected to start 3 weeks ago...look at that comb!!

All of them hanging out on the fence. The one with the small, pink comb is Freya, and she's way behind the others. I figure I have a while to wait for her:

ETA: I forgot to mention that Lexi has been squatting for two weeks now, and I've looked all around the yard every day to make sure there are no hidden nests everywhere. One of my blue ameraucanas has been squatting the last few days, so I'm getting pretty excited for her to start, too. I need eggs!!!

Hi everyone
frow.gif

Haven't been on here for a while. Won't bother repeating the horror story of spring deliveries, frozen chicks, DOA's, etc. so I will just post a pic of my two surivors. Yep, they are hatchery stock, but I think they are turning out pretty nice considering. Ok, yes I know one of them is actually GLW but hey, that's my survivors so here they are at 5 months.
