The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

Well the amount of white on their heads determines the gender, so a chick with loads of white on its head is a roo and a chick with not very much white on its head means its a hen
I hope that's not the case because there supposed to be sexed pullets. If that is true there 50% male and the hatchery is going to be owing me even more chicks!

Why must you argue everything, the fact that my neighbour breeds loads of slw and shows them with success and he has spoken to me about sexing them means he probably is right, I am no pro at sexing the I was merely trying to help you out, and bear in mind we had nothing to compare to, if there had been a group of mixed genders I probably could have sexed them easier but in was sexing a single chick on its own with you and two same gender chicks with me.

Ok Frizzle13 and Nickeyo, this is not the place to be arguing. If your going to do so please do it in a private message. The arguing has made this discussion rather uncomfortable, not to mention it is against the rules.

So please keep it a nice friendly atmosphere!

Thank you

I want to add....

I have heard of some lines of SLW can be sex by *white* by the breeder, MOST lines can't.
You have to breed your line for many years to know by looking at them. Some breed a male line and a female line.
I personally think its great when someone is so talented to be able to tell there own day old chicks sex by looking at them. They simply ..know.

Most bird that are purchased at a hatchery are vent sexed at day old chicks, unless they are sex linked birds. Those you can tell by color. Wyandottes are not sex links. (Unless you cross breed certain colors). Some vent checked chicks are sexed wrong and you get males. It happens.

Thank you for clearing that up. I was a little confused because I didn't think Wyandottes were a auto sex, or a sex link. Mine are from Meyer hatchery so I'm sure there not from a particular male or female line. I don't mind a male or two, and I'll find out soon enough if their all girls.
