The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

I only have the 2 pullets, no SLW roo so if they end up breeding with the roos I do have, theyre going to be mixed anyway.

I dont show any of my birds, just keep them cause I love having them! I sure got curious though when I noticed that, it got me to wondering if that was a common occurance. Ive got 2 GLW also but their combs look normal so it was just that one oddbird out that I couldnt figure on since I hadnt heard of a single comb wyandotte. Thanks for taking time to help out!

I've got a SLW with a single comb as well, the rest have the rose comb and it looks like 2 of my pullets are turning into cockerels. That's hatchery chicks for you! LOL

I now have a roo named Matilda and another possible named Jane!

Mine are hatchery, and I love them, and they all have normal combs,.....................................................but they have huge combs! LOL I knew the sex of mine at like a week old.

I purchased a number of BLRW from a breeder last year, their stock were from a couple of the well known names in BLRW. 2 of them turned out to have single combs. So it's not just the hatchery birds. My SLW, which are all hatchery, actually have better combs overall than the breeder birds LOL From what I have read it's a recessive, so it can be hiding in a breeding program for a long time then just pop up when the right genes combine. I breed a short coated breed of dogs, and we have a long coat recessive gene in our gene pool. I see pedigrees of only short haired dogs for 5 and 6 generations, then out pops a long haired pup. Doesn't effect their ability to work, just means they can't win in the show ring.

Hello! I recently got 2 SLW pullets. They're about 2 weeks old now and I've noticed that their combs look different. One looks like what I'd expect a rosecomb to look like, but the other looks like it's getting a
single comb??? Is this normal? Does anyone know why theres such a difference? :)Thanks!

I got 5 straight run SLW and one has a single comb. Bought them from the local Rural King (Cackle Hatchery is their supplier) We believe of is a roo so we'll most likely rehome him once he's older to someone who wants him as a pet. Son can't show him at 4-H :-(

That makes sense! Ive had a time of it trying to make sense of genetics, but it interests me so Ive been trying. You getting long haired dogs every so many generations was a good example! Your BLRW is beautiful by the way! I love that coloring!

Rural King is the farm store I got mine from. Believe it or not the only breed they had straight run was barred rocks, all the rest of their chickens were pullets. I ended up getting a barred roo since I'm in need of a roo (a bantam OEG is the only other I have) unfortunately I didn't realize til later that any offspring he makes are going to be barred regardless of the mother. What makes you think yours is a roo? I know there's a chance of getting a roo even when they're marked as pullets so I'm actually hoping one of mine is actually a roo! We don't have neighbors so I don't have to worry about too many roos and I'm really wanting more than barred chicks from my future generations!

We already see a RED comb and some major chest bumping out of him!! We'll keep him until we're 100% sure! We are LOVING this breed already!
