The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

Check out my broody mama, Waffle. She is sitting on 8 eggs. I don't think she's ever laid a fertile egg. She doesn't let the rooster breed her. Her feathers are perfect (well, near). I guess she's ok being a surrogate, though. Unfortunately, she is my fanciest hen. She is Jerry Foley lines, and I got her from Jim Monk. Sigh. After this batch, I'm going to cross my fingers that she gets laying again.

What a great name and beautiful bird.

Well I posted a pic of my little bit back when she was 6wks and she is now 12wks there hasn't been much of a change. I call her a girl but still a bit confused on that. She is getting a little puffy on her head like the silkie and I can see a small rose comb like on the SLW. I haven't noticed any rooster tendoncies so I hope it still means hen. Does anyone else have any ideas from the pic?

Does anyone know how long a chick can go without a heat lamp? I want to pick up two SLW 5 hours away, I'm worried about traveling that long. How can I keep them warm?

How old is it? If it's really young then I wouldn't recommend traveling with it at all, but if it's 3 weeks or older, then just keep the car warm and it should be fine.

They will be newly hatched chicks, that is why I'm worried. I couldn't find any locally. Do you think if I plugged a heat lamp into a portable energy source they would be okay? I can hold the container the entire trip as I won't be the driver.

I've gone three hours away for chicks before and they've been fine in the car. As long as you keep it slightly warm and the AC isn't on they will be okay. Chicks are not always huddled under mother hen, they scurry out occasionally. Just make sure to get them under a heat lamp once you are home.

You could get those packs used to keep hunter's hands warm for them to snuggle up to, or just keep the car warm.

Also, chicks get shipped for days at a time in cold weather, and even though they're shipped in groups, it's often not a very warm trip. I've never tried driving a long distance, but I know when I pick mine up at the Post Office I just put the box on the floor in the front and run my heat through the floor vents. Keeps them nice and warm (I cool myself with my window, LOL).
