The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

This is what she looked like when she's younger. I was just told she was hatchery equality. Are you sure she's a mix? And I'll try to check her for mites today, but I haven't really seen her over-grooming (but... She does seem to take more dust bathes than the other hens). I do have a rrooster, but he tends to stay away from her. Idk if she's stressed, she seems pretty happy. Fairly high up on the pecking order...

She certainly doesn't look to be pure bred. I have seen ' incomplete ' lacing on some SLW but she also looks to be a little on the ' small side ' for the breed.
There are several causes for feather damage, over sexing by your roo, what is the ratio of hens to roo in your pen ? Lice / mites , poor nutrition, birds that are methionine deficient tend to have poor feather development and reduced growth . In an attempt to satisfy their craving for amino acids , they will often eat their own feathers and sometimes that of their flock mates.

Yeah, she is a little bit smaller. The rooster/hen ratio is 3/10, but two are just cockerels and are too young to mate and I'll be getting rid of them soon, and the silkie rooster I have is not very dominant. Whatever it is, what do you think I should try to do?

I'm not sure how much time you spend observing your flock , but my Silkie Roos will have a go at anything , no matter how much bigger than they are. Young cockerels can be brutal when they are in their ' learning ' stages. I guess what I am trying to say is , if the Roos are in with the hens , just because you don't see them mating , doesn't necessarily mean it's not the problem.
Check your birds over for lice and mites and take a look at the analysis on your feed bag. Remember too that the vitamins and minerals listed on the feed bag have a ' shelf life ' and some start to deteriorate after just a couple of weeks of storage. Internal parasites can also have your birds looking ' ordinary ' . Perhaps a regular dose of ' rooster booster ' might be somewhere to start.

Now that I have two Silver Laced Wyandottes, does anybody have a link to breed standards? I'm guessing that besides healthy, people prefer more white feathers just penciled in black, rather than darker? Curious...

I have not been able to find the current SOP online yet. I think you would have to purchase the APA Standards of Perfection book to get it.

I did find this old SOP book free on Google. I read most of it and I really think it helped.

I also spend $10 on the Ebook BREEDING BLUE LACED RED WYANDOTTE E-BOOK by Jerry Foley

I know it's about BLR, but it's mostly about Wyandotte type and it's well worth the $10.

Good luck!

They look great from this angle. Do you have any side shots?

Sadly I don't but I will take some soon. I also need help with my rooster u picked him up today and to find that he had built up dirt in the palm of his feet so I picked it out with tweezers and flesh also came out with blood I need serious help as I don't think he will be able to breed with his feet like that.

That is ' bumble foot ' , if the core has dropped out you need to disinfect the sight and spray with a good wound spray , I use Terramycin . It is best to keep him in a clean dry area to keep bacteria out, if that is at all possible.

With SLW there are two lines, a pullet line PL and a cockerel line CL. Basically you put the lighter /whiter roo over your darker pullets and your darker roo over your light pullets. Crisp lacing , round shaped body, nice yellow well spaced legs and a good comb are all things to strive for.
