The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

We finally picked up our first chickens!! We were looking for Dominiques, but ended up picking up 6 Silver Laced Wyandottes. We went with the Wyandottes because they were the only ones left in town! AND we absolutely loooove them!!

Good choice. Welcome to the SLW club!

One of my Wyandottes started laying about 2 weeks ago. Her eggs are much smaller than I expected. I thought they were supposed to lay large eggs and hers are smaller than my Brahma which lay medium eggs. The shells are nice and thick and well formed so I don't think it's a nutrition issue. Does she just need to mature a bit more and they'll get larger over time or do I have a defective chicken lol?

Pullet eggs are small and get larger as the hen matures. This can even take a few months.
That being said...how does she compare in size with the other young hens? If she is smaller, then her eggs will naturally be a little smaller than the other hens.

Thank you for your input! I think she's pretty average sized for a Wyandotte. She's the largest out of the 3 Wyandottes that I have. She's also the only one laying so far. Though one doesn't look to far from her first egg. I'll see if I can get a pic of one of her eggs next to a Brahma egg for comparison.

I absolutely love my Silver Laced Wyandotte! Its a funny story because I have 4 chickens all from different places. I have a SLW, 2 ameracuanas, and a orpington. The SLW was the only chicken I didn't get to pick but she is by far my favorite. When we got her from the pet store she was crying so loud it was hurting my ears and giving me a headache. when i asked for a different chick they refused. But now Im so happy they didn't give me another chick because she is so nice and friendly. When you're doing something she just jumps on your back or shoulder. When I sit down she just jumps on my lap and sits there. My other chickens don't really like me and run away when they realize I don't have any treats. Im so happy we have her because she loves everyone.

My dad named her Osaka and I think its a fabulous name.

Hello, awesome thread with great pics. We started with 4 Barnevelders and just got a SLW. She is the best and friendliest bird we have. Loves to be petted and picked up! She's 6 mos old and hasn't started laying yet but we can't wait.

A local farmer was selling eggs and I usually pay them no mind since I have 50 heads of chicken already. But my husband was amazed by deep dark brown of the eggs and had to have some. Then b4 we left he had a bright idea of hatching them to get more eggs like these. We asked if they were fertile and what mama and daddy were. The eggs are layed from a welsummer and fertilized by a silver laced Wyandotte and ideas on what I may get?

You should end up with laced birds, but they may have incomplete lacing. Many of the SLW traits are dominant so they shine through. Here is a post about it that you might find useful.

ETA: Looks like you already found it.
