The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

She has been laying on some hard surface, maybe a nest box, and worn away some feathers. I've seen my layers do this over the years. Nothing to worry about, and they will grow back. =D

I am going to have to see where she is going. She cant lay on top of the nest box but there are plenty of other hard areas in the yard. I will keep an eye out for where she goes over the weekend. maybe I will find where she is laying her eggs (if she has started).

Here I just took these pics for comparison. As of this morning not only is my BR more feathered, but she is larger than my SLW. I suspect it's likely a breed difference, but also could be their hatch dates are different.

Did your chicks come sexed? Or straight run?

Thanks for sharing your pics with me! Mine looks a lot like yours. I bought mine from a local hatchery that was set up at a feed store. There were people breathing down my neck in line behind me and I didn't have the chance to really talk to the man selling them. However, per the advertisement, they were supposed to be sexed pullets. So, I'm crossing my fingers that I have a strong 90% on my side. :)

Bridebeliever, thanks for your input as well. You have a very good point about not comparing different breeds to each other, which I have been trying to keep in mind. I realize that I shouldn't do that but I just can't help it because I want it to be a female so bad. I work with dogs and cats so you would think that I'm a logical thinker like that...I'm just SO excited to know right now! So, I guess, I just need to be patient. Geez...that's so hard to do for a first timer! Thanks all!!

I'm sorry to say this but it could also be a roo. The combination of light coloring and the late fethering in my case always turned out to be males. I hope I'm wrong but I'm just telling you my experience.

Here's some pictures I posted of my Wyandottes when I was trying to figure out "he or she".

The GLW and one SLW started pinking in the comb at TWO WEEKS!

The SLW really threw me for a loop when she all of a sudden started sprouting a long tail feather!
Her tail is normal now, I think the long one fell out. I think she was 11 weeks old here.

Here she is at 5 1/2 weeks.

My Wyandottes were BY FAR the hardest of my pullets to sex. I didn't feel I knew FOR SURE what they were until they were practically grown! I assure you they are all pullets, I have been in the coop when many of their eggs are laid.

I am so excited m Silver Laced Wyandotte "Dot" (my kids named her), is getting ready for eggs!! The wattles are turning red! It probably will be another month but I am just excited to see that she is maturing. All my other hens won't be laying for at least 3-4 months. Can one one tell me what is going on with her breast feathers? Why are they missing?
Maybe she is pulling them in preparation for eggs... they like to keep them close to skin or so the books say. Maybe she is really super close to laying!

That would be really awesome if she was closer to laying than I had originally thought! I cant wait to get eggs. I send my kids out into the yard to look for eggs every evening. So far they have not found any. We have a half acre and they free range on it.

When you reach down to pet her on her back does she do the squat for you? That's a tell tale sign that eggs are on their way!

Yes she does. She has been squatting for about a week now.
The average seems to be about 2 weeks to eggs from the first squat! WooHoo!

That means an egg any day now!
