hey I tried to go on BYC a little while ago and I got the same 'the sky is falling' page that I got when you where changing BYC. the only difference that I saw was that my picture albums where cuter than before. What happened?

The sky does seem to be falling a lot more since we got the new platform.

It does not seem that way to me at all, not when compared to the times the old BYC would just shut down. And since we know there are performance problems here, it doesn't bother me one whit. It tells me someone is fixing something.

I wasn't complaining, I was asking what was going on.

This was planned downtime and was for the introduction of some new features and improvements to the site.

Our engineers do bi-weekly updates to the site. Most of the time there is no downtime required but sometimes (like this case) a little downtime is required. It shouldn't have been more than a few minutes and so we don't worry about notifying the entire community in advance.

If there are cases where we expect a long period of downtime we'll definitely pre-notify the community!

On a related note, while this new system isn't perfect, there have been quantifiable WAY fewer instances of downtime on the new platform than we had before... and I know that for a literal fact since I watch every statistic known to man. What' even more impressive: Pretty much every case of downtime here has been scheduled vs. the random downtime that we didn't schedule or know about on the old system. All of us should definitely prefer scheduled and known downtime over unknown.
