The Stable Horror Story(Not an actual horror story)

Just saying in general, without of course knowing any details about whatever specific case may be being discussed here...

...when a boarder gets behind on board, (even if they are just a month behind but it's happened a lot), it is also quite common for them to be behind on payments to the farrier and vet. This causes a LARGE problem for the boarding barn management, who have to continue to use the farrier and vet for everyone else.

If the boarding barn just up and sold the horse one day without any warning, and against whatever PA's laws are on the subject (I am not certain anymore but I had *thought* it was one of the states where a longer process was required), then certainly the horse's owner has the makings of a valid civil suit.

HOWEVER I have been around quite enough boarding barns over the years to say that this virtually never happens and I expect there was a lot more "to" the story ;/

well, it's rough, but like evictions, etc.....it's important to read the fine print. Hard lesson. Was the woman who's horse was sold mentally disabled or ? You did not mention, so I'm sure she was not. Maybe she might have a case?
Otherwise, caveat lector.

I agree with most posters. It is a common thing. Horses are EXPENSIVE to have. Why should the stable give anybody a free ride. That animal needs to be fed weather the boarder pays or not. If the boarder pays late - somebody else has to pay to feed that animal. (just my oponion)

Yup it happens. And will be happening more and more as the economy worsens.

Some people up here have moved into new barns and then never paid. Basically abandoned the horses. Barn owners have no choice and have every legal right to sell a boarders horse when the owner gets behind on board. With the rising costs of grain hay and shavings.. what do you think would happen? Barn owner is supposed to soak it into the rest of the bills? There is also worming, dentistry, hooves that need care, fly care, etc.
Not cheap or easy work.
Also. Many barn owners will try and work with a horse owner if the person comes to them and explains the situation and makes SOME attempt at paying. Or maybe tries to work off some of the board costs by doing stalls etc.
