I think this may have been how the joke was started...
Last summer, there was a bridge out in our county and after picking my daughter up from day care, I would have to go 12 miles out of my way to go home. While going down a rural stretch of road, one of the residents had a flock of white hens. One decided to strut across the road and I slowed down so I didn't hit it.
My daughter, then 3 yrs old, in the backseat, asked, "Why did we stop?"
"There's a chicken crossing the road."
"Why is the chicken crossing the road?"
"Well, it's trying to get to the other side."
I wonder if that was how the whole joke got started. It's really more of an observation than a joke, seeing it in action.
Enjoy
