That is his name and he is truly a young Pekin drake and truly a dirty duck...all the other Pekins are blindingly white as tho dipped in Clorox...they bathe and preen...always doing the in out in out of the pool...well, dirty duck gets in the pool when the others do, but he acts like he is afraid of the water...never gets off the brick step provided for them to get out...dabbles frantically and out of the pool he jumps, lays in the dirt and has a forever greyish dirty undercarriage...I moved the ducks and the geese to a new area today and together...originally the geese hated the ducks and would drive them out of their area so I had locked them up side by side for about two weeks...they became accustomed to each other and when I mvoed them to the big yard today, together, they are just fine...well, I filled two big kiddy pools so each would have their own...working out well...back to Dirty Duck...he got in the pool and got knocked off the brick when all the others decided to get out in a hurry and get around or back to, grazing...Dirt Duck could not figure out how to get back on the brick and get out of the pool as all the other ducks had gone to the opposite side of the pool on the outside and meandered off...he was on that side of the pool screaming cause he could not get out...Roseanne was screaming back at him and worried about him...he could not figure it out...I had to go get him out of the pool...he was scared half to death but he must have known I was there to help as in his fear, he stayed where I could reach him...lifted him out and he was water logged...a ton of water ran out of his feathers...I released him and he ran as fast as his little legs could carry him to the other ducks...the geese were watching the entire thing highly amused and yes, Dirty Duck is still dirty...what is wrong with this big ninny of a water fowl that he is afraid of the water and chooses to be yucky looking rather than pristene like his friends?

I had a rouen drake that was like that he loved the water as a chick but as soon as he molted he forgot how to get in and out of the pool. so he had to always set by the pool while my other ducks swam. You should post a picture of your dirty duck. It's pretty funny how some ducks are like that. I have a rouen/pekin cross hen and she absoultely hates the water she screams and cries everytime I put her in it!

that is funny...I will try to get a pic of my dirty boy this evenign when I go out to feed the crew...those Pekins really are a bunRch of clowns...Roseanne is so loud and bossy and just telling the world off all of the time...hence the name...it is comical how they all move as a group...Dirty Duck was truly frantic when he got left behind...

Last summer one of my hen ducks was being very mean so we would kind of punish her and put her in the garage in our dog crate for abour 10 minutes. I had 2 pekins then and my rouen drake. when she was in the garage they would all set outside the door and just scream and cry until we let her out. that was pretty funny. I have chickens ducks and a guinea hen. My ducks stay together. most of my chickens stay by themselves. What is really odd is my guinea hen stay with my black australorp hen and has one of her "fits" when she can't find her.

thanks Dances With Ducks...I think you may be on to something...poor guy was definately water logged...anything I can do for him to correct that or is that just how he is going to be? No, he can not live in my house...lol...he, like the others, is a poop machine...

Sorry I don't know how to help, I have no experience with that. But that's not to say there is no hope for getting Dirty Duck clean and dry. Try doing a search for "oil gland, ducks" or maybe "preening ducks" and you may find some things other people have written. Also you could post a question on the illnessess forum. Hope that helps. Good luck and let us know what happens.
